Tony: Recently, we’ve been talking about listening to music and we cover. Streaming services. We talked about headphones and earbuds.
Tony: Our last show was about desktop and bookshelf size speakers. And today I thought we’d go a little bigger and we talk about large speakers, floor standing speakers. Why would you want to get bigger speakers and what you should consider when you’re looking at them? So, What do you think, gentlemen, large speakers.
Tony: Do any of you own large format speakers.
Steven: Yep. So I have a slightly unusual setup. I am not using speakers per se. I’m using amplifier speakers. They are from Roland who are well known for their electronic musical instruments. And they are KC 500 keyboard amplifiers.
Tony: Okay, so amplifier and speakers built into one. You plug your keyboard into it And you can perform and play it.
Steven: Right. Or you can plug a CD player into it and you get wonderful sound. And I have two of them for left and right. And they’re physically pretty big.
Tony: How big would you say are the cabinet size and do you know the size of the Wolfers?
Steven: Yeah, the Wolf is very big. 15 inch,
Tony: Wow.
Steven: And the cabinet is about a two foot cube.
Tony: Okay. And does it just have one Wolfer in it or is there a smaller tweeter horn.
Steven: Yes, there’s a 15 inch woofer and a horn tweeter. And the rated power output is 150 Watts.
Tony: What about SPL? Does it say anything about that?
Steven: Hang on. That was my search page saying no, there’s no mention of SPL.
Tony: Okay.
Bob: Steven, is it a single amplifier and an a crossover or is it multiple amplifiers? Do you know?
Steven: I don’t know.
Tony: It’s an interesting question because some speakers have separate amplifiers for Each driver. in the speaker.
Steven: Yeah, I’m guessing it’s just one big amp.
Tony: Okay.
Bob: That’s what I would guess is that one tubers it’s solid.
Steven: I’m pretty sure it’s solid state. Not too.
Tony: Yeah,
Steven: If it was to be, I would say two or tube.
Bob: well, because, because a lot of instrument amplifiers are tube amplifiers
Tony: Like guitar
Steven: true. Traditionally. Yes.
Steven: That’s true. Yes. Yes. So a two foot cube with a big plastic grill on the front. So you can kick it without causing damage.
Tony: Right. Protecting the drivers in the front. Cause especially if you’re performing onstage...
