(1) British lawmakers have agreed to consider a bill that would outlaw smoking in private vehicles carrying children, in order to reduce their exposure to secondhand smoke. Members of the House of Commons recently voted 78 to 66 for a bill to be drafted that would require the Secretary of State to introduce a ban, after hearing arguments about the effect of passive smoking on children. The bill will return to the House of Commons later this year.

(2) A rare white elephant, historically considered an omen of political change, has been captured in the west of military-ruled Myanmar. The female animal was captured by an official on Saturday in a town on the coast. The elephant is aged about 38 and is more than 2 meters tall but it is yet unclear where the animal will be kept. Kings and leaders in Myanmar have traditionally treasured white elephants, whose rare appearances in the country are believed to signal political change.

A report from an ongoing series of studies has found that the number of 6th graders involved in social networking has more than doubled and the number taking at least one online class has tripled during the last five years. And the number of teachers with active Facebook accounts has jumped from 1 percent in 2007 to 44 percent in 2010.

Meanwhile, the report also found that one third of today's 6th graders own a personal smartphone, and twice as many teachers and administrators have a smartphone today than in 2008. And among 6th graders, the most likely school technology complaint today is about restrictive filtering, not connectivity speed, the top complaint of 6th graders in 2005.

The findings pull from a survey of nearly 300,000 students, tens of thousands of teachers and parents, and thousands of education support staff, and are the latest results released in the Speak Up report from Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit group based in Irvine, California, that advocates the use of science, math, and technology resources in schools.

Data about student and parent technology use was released on March 31, and information about teacher and other education personnel use came out on May 11. The survey points to mobile learning, online and blended learning, and e-textbook use as growing technology trends in schools.

By the way, you look very beautiful today. How glossy your feathers are, and how bright your eyes are!” The Crow was happy at the Fox's praise. “I'm sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does. I'd love to hear you sing just one song to make this a good day for me.” The Crow lifted up her head and began to sing, but the moment she opened her mouth, the piece of cheese fell to the ground. The Fox took it and said knowingly, “That will do. That was all I wanted. In exchange for your cheese I will give you a piece of advice for the future. Do not trust flatterers.”

In her junior high school classroom, Yui Watanabe of Saitama looks like an ordinary thirteen-year-old girl. But outside the classroom, Ms. Watanabe is a rising star on the GP125 road racing circuit. That's right ── this otherwise ordinary junior high school girl is a motorcycle racer.

In fact, next year she is planning to compete in the All Japan Road Race Championship, and is hoping to join the European tour in the near future.

Ms. Watanabe's successes on the track have not come overnight. She began riding motorcycles on a 40cc bike when she was just five years old, and started racing when she was six. In 2007, at the age of eleven, she began competing in the GP125 class, on bikes with an engine displacement of 125cc or less. She won her first regional championship title in 2008 in Miyagi Prefecture.

Ms. Watanabe's hero is the Italian motorcycle champion, Valentino Rossi. She is preparing now to get an international racing license, and hopes to compete in Japan and internationally.

She wants to make her debut on the European stage in Germany in 2011. She says she knows she'll have to make a lot of adjustments ── from difficulties with foreign languages to the more competitive style of the European tracks. But, like her hero Rossi, she is determined to win.

Hello, everyone. I'd like to talk about the problems with clearing rain forests. Forests are disappearing all over the world. People are cutting trees down to clear land for growing crops and keeping farm animals. When forests are cut down, CO2 levels increase and the plants and the animals living in the area disappear. This can especially be seen in rain forests in developing countries, but while the people in developed countries like us might criticize those countries, we are also responsible for the problem. The people in rain forests grow crops and animals to export to developed countries. They are clearing the rain forests to live. They cannot earn money or live without cutting down the forests. How can we ask them to stop doing this without helping them at all?

The environmental problems are caused by many different factors. We must identify each factor and work on them both individually and globally.
