A clean house, a clean car, clean clothes, even the proverbial 'clean slate' - why do we so enjoy things that are clean? Perhaps it is because it brings to mind a sense of purity and newness. In Psalm 51, David is longing for a clean & pure heart, free from sin and stain, knowing the Lord looks on the heart. Only God can create a clean heart through the washing and cleansing of our sin by the blood of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. But like David, we must beg the Lord to restore our hearts with faith that he will respond. Today we learn that forgiveness restores us from sin, but brokenness and contriteness before God produces joy!
As we continue in Psalm 5 we discover the next 3 ingredients in this recipe for rejoicing. In part 1, we examined David's example calling us to earnest prayer and purity before God, which ultimately leads to joy, even in the midst of crisis. The truth of God's steadfast love, mercy and grace changes the life of the believer, refocuses perspective and redirects pursuits. In the face of persecution and trial, be encouraged by today's message knowing that for those who love God all things work together for their good - and for his glory!
In our last message, we learned how spiritual poverty leads to riches. As we continue in the Beatitudes, Jesus now tells us that sorrow leads to joy: how is this possible? The sorrow and mourning that Christ refers to is not worldly sorry, but the sorrow that results over our sin. Grief and devastation over sin furthers our walk in sanctification, changes us more and more into the image of Chris, and God himself will comfort and bless those who mourn in this way.

The things that we prioritize in life will ultimately determine the path of our life. Pursuing goals that are temporal or physical are not necessarily wrong, but they must not be placed above those that are spiritual. God's word instructs us to seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness because that is where God's promises to his people are fulfilled. It is where the antidote to anxiety and the place of blessing, peace and joy is found!

In today's passage, Jesus says, "No one can serve two masters." He explains that people cannot serve both God and money (or wealth). A person will inevitably choose one to prioritize over the other. This message reinforces the idea that one's ultimate allegiance must be to God, as divided loyalty will lead to spiritual failure. Christ warns us to maintain a clear, focused vision on God and beware of t the dangers of divided priorities, particularly the temptation to worship wealth.
