The Tale of Two Grandmothers: What Their Lives Teach Us About Longevity

What makes it possible for one woman to remain active, connected and independent well into her nineties, while another experiences illness and physical decline decades earlier?

In the first full episode of Live Long and Prosper, I share the story of my two grandmothers, Joan and Margaret. Born less than a decade apart, their lives took very different paths, and so did their experiences of ageing.

One died at 73 after years of serious health problems. The other lived to 97, remained physically strong into her final years and continued walking well into her nineties.

Their stories helped spark my fascination with longevity and the everyday habits, environments and relationships that influence how well we age.

We also explore the Blue Zones, five regions where people regularly live long, healthy lives, and the patterns these communities share. From natural movement and nourishing food to purpose, stress regulation and strong social connection, these principles offer a practical way to think about our own long-term vitality.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

The important difference between looking younger and living well for longer

How our everyday habits can shape our health over time

What my grandmothers’ lives taught me about strength, independence and healthy ageing

Why movement, purpose and community become increasingly important as we age

What the world’s Blue Zones can teach us about longevity

The five Vitality Foundations I’ll explore throughout this podcast

How you can begin creating your own Personal Blue Zone

    The five Vitality Foundations are:

    Purpose

    Body

    Metabolism

    Nervous System Regulation

    Connection

This episode sets the scene for everything we’ll explore on Live Long and Prosper: the science, stories and conversations that can help women live with greater energy, health and vitality for decades to come.

Episode 0: Welcome to Live Long and Prosper

If you've ever watched your baby boomer mother hit her fifties and quietly absorbed what that was supposed to mean for you, this episode is your official un-absorbing.

In this welcome episode, Claire Cardew introduces Live Long and Prosper, the podcast for women who remember life before smartphones and are done following a map that was never designed for their terrain. Claire shares the personal obsession behind the show, where it came from, what it stands for, and what you can expect every Wednesday from here.

    In this episode:

The cultural story we inherited about ageing, and why it was never the inevitable one

How decades of research pink-washed for women left us following advice that was never designed for our bodies

Why the problem isn't information, it's that the systems most women are trying to follow were built for someone else's life entirely

The Blue Zones research and the five foundations that underpin everything on this show: purpose, physical health, metabolic health, nervous system regulation, and social connection
