Christopher Lee Palmer, 39, was officially declared a missing person on January 16 by Arkansas authorities. Chris is an experienced camper who frequently travels through national forests and is known to keep his family informed of his plans. He was traveling with his German shepherd, Zoey.
Chris and Zoey went camping in the Smoky Mountains on December 8. From December 10 through December 27, he was camping in the Boone Fork area. On December 25, Chris told his family he planned to travel to George Washington National Forest on December 28 and stay until January 7.
On January 4, Chris sent a text confirming he was in the George Washington National Forest but did not provide a specific location. He said he planned to stay another week. On January 9, he texted again stating he was heading to Monongahela National Forest. He later sent a short video of the terrain but explained that cell service was very spotty and he could not talk.
New information from investigators shows that Chris’s red 2017 Ford F-250 was actually in Dare County as early as the afternoon of January 9. Traffic camera footage shows a blue and white kayak in the bed of the truck at that time.
Mobile phone data indicates Chris’s phone was near Avon on the evening of January 10 and near Cape Point on January 11.
On January 12, National Park Service law enforcement rangers located Chris’s truck stuck on the beach at Cape Hatteras National Seashore near Buxton. Visitor reports confirm the truck was also stuck on the beach on January 11. The kayak seen earlier in the truck was not present and has not been located.
Chris is believed to have still been traveling with his German shepherd, Zoey, and may have remained in the area. The National Park Service continues active investigative efforts and is asking for help from the public, including boaters, residents, and anyone who may have been in the Outer Banks area during that time frame.
