This week, we applaud the confidence being built by our local senior gay communities as they celebrate at the regular Gay Seniors Dances – happily staying out of the closet. And we also note the career of Magda Szubanski who has made a fabulous career on TV and film, and not been thwarted by her sexuality during the recent marriage equality debate.
Some of us had an easy time allowing our sexuality to bloom, like Nigel Hawthorn (UK star of TV and stage) who managed to quietly live his gay partnered life with none of the public condemnation known by other gays; but then there are some like gay Kenneth Williams (UK star of film and radio) who was tormented by his inner demons of unsatisfied sexuality.
A recent SBS TV presentation talked about the ‘madness’ of English King George (portrayed on stage by Nigel Hawthorn in Alan Bennett’s play of the same subject), and recounted the positives and negatives in his reign and the signs that the king may have been experiencing mental anguish that today we would know how to treat and manage – no real madness involved.
In International matters, we talk about the persecution currently occurring to gay Chechens, and in the US they are hopeful that the end of HIV as an uncontrolled epidemic is possible, with the advent of PreP medication.
Listen to these stories, opinions and more, presented with some merriment by Chris, Gordon & Phil.
Show #798- First broadcast on 10 April 2018
