Life brings challenges we choose and challenges we never saw coming. Some can be solved like a puzzle, while others involve grief, illness, financial pressure, broken relationships, or circumstances beyond our control.

In Mark 7 and Matthew 15, a Gentile mother comes to Jesus because her daughter is suffering under an unclean spirit. She faces barrier after barrier: she is a woman in a culture that often dismissed women, a Gentile approaching a Jewish teacher, and a mother carrying a need she cannot fix herself.

Jesus does not immediately answer her. The disciples want to send her away, and Jesus explains that His mission is directed first toward Israel. Yet the woman does not leave. She kneels before Him and says, “Lord, help me.”

Her response is persistent, but it is also humble. She does not demand that Jesus prove Himself or insist that He owes her an answer. She trusts that even the smallest expression of His mercy is enough. Jesus commends her great faith, and when she returns home, she finds her daughter delivered.

Great faith does not mean we always understand what God is doing. It means trusting His goodness when His timing, methods, and answers are not immediately clear.

John the Baptist confronted Herod with a difficult truth: the king had rejected God’s law and needed to repent. Herod feared John, recognized him as righteous, felt troubled by his message, and even enjoyed listening to him. Yet he never believed.

Herod’s story warns us that hearing God’s Word is not the same as responding to it. We can be interested in Scripture, puzzled by the gospel, or moved by a sermon without surrendering our lives to Jesus. Christ does not simply call us to listen. He calls us to repent and believe.

When Herod was pressured to choose between protecting John and protecting his reputation, he chose the approval of his guests. Although he knew John was a righteous man, he ordered his execution rather than admit that his own promise was wrong.

John’s death also points forward to Jesus. Like John, Jesus proclaimed the truth, confronted powerful leaders, was handed over by a weak-willed ruler, and was laid in a tomb. But unlike John, Jesus did not remain there.

Jesus is more than a prophet. He is the suffering servant and victorious King who willingly gave His life for sinners. Herod used power selfishly, but Jesus laid down His life to serve and save. He suffered in our place, died for our sins, and rose again so that everyone who repents and believes can receive forgiveness and eternal life.

Communion reminds us that Jesus’ body was broken and His blood was shed for us. It is not simply a religious tradition. It is an act of worship through which we remember the Savior who entered suffering willingly and rose from the grave in victory.
