The angels began with the words, “Glory to God in highest heaven,” and ended with the words “peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” God’s gift of His Son is celebrated in heaven where God dwells all the way to earth where people dwell—people who need the gift that God offers them. Jesus the promised Messiah had been born as a human baby in Bethlehem. All heaven is giving God the glory. And on earth, we would experience God’s peace. But what kind of peace? And with whom? The truth of the Virgin Birth doctrine of traditional Christianity is that Jesus Christ had no natural father but was conceived by Mary through the power of the Holy Spirit. The doctrine that Mary was the sole natural parent of Jesus is based on the infancy narratives contained in the Gospel accounts of Matthew and Luke. It was universally accepted in the Christian church by the 2nd century, and was enshrined in the Apostles’ Creed, and, except for several minor sects, was not seriously challenged until the rise of Enlightenment theology in the 18th century.
