Jesus' plan to rescue us was to love us enough to come and seek and find us and to give the angels in heaven a reason to rejoice. His plan is our plan as a church too - to love enough to seek and find those who are lost and without hope and to rejoice with the angels as they are welcomed home by our heavenly Father.

We might be slow to admit it, but we think ourselves to be pretty good people. But Jesus exposes our “goodness” and redefines what it means to be good. And then he gives us his goodness and makes us his now and forever.

Jesus says he came to bring fire and distress. But it’s through those he saves and renews us. He says he came to bring division, not peace. But it’s through that division we find real, true, divine peace. Jesus doesn’t always work the way we think he should. And thank God for that. He brings us great blessings in ways we would consider backwards. But that’s how grace works.

In this fourth of five messages for a series called "He Said What? The Shocking Statements of Jesus" based on Luke 12:49-53 Jesus shows us how renewal comes through destruction and how peace comes through division.

Our idea of discipleship is going to church, reading our Bible, and giving an offering. We like a convenient, comfortable Christianity that fits with our life. Jesus radically flips our idea of discipleship on its head and says it’s all about complete and total commitment.
