The IPCC just released a landmark report on the connection between how we use land and how we are changing the climate. Koko Warner studies impacts, vulnerability, and risks in her research at the UN Climate Secretariate. She is one of more than 100 expert authors who volunteered their time over the course of two years to write this report.

Since Jair Bolsonaro took office at the start of 2019, deforestation in the Amazon has jumped by 67%. Not far from the edge of the world's largest tropical rainforest sits the Xingu indigenous territory, home to immense biodiversity thanks to its well-preserved forest. But in the surrounding area, cropland is creeping closer.

Researchers at the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich have found that planting trees is one of the best ways to fight climate change. For a study they published earlier this summer, the researchers mapped out all the available land in the world where trees could be planted, excluding existing cities or agricultural land.
