Pastors David Felten and Jeff Procter-Murphy, along with an all-star cast of Bible scholars and top church teachers, provide a primer to a church movement that encourages every Christian to "live the questions" instead of "forcing the answers". Based on the best-selling DVD course of the same name, Living the Questions: The Wisdom of Progressive Christianity includes commentary from such best-selling authors as Diana Butler Bass, John Shelby Spong, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Brian McLaren, and others. Tackling issues of faith and controversial subjects such as the church's position on homosexuality, Living the Questions is the most comprehensive, indeed the only survey of progressive Christianity in existence today.

A BOOK TO FOLLOW UP THEIR DVD SERIES FOR MODERN-THINKING CHRISTIANS
Coauthors David Felten and Jeff Procter-Murphy wrote in the Preface of this 2012 book, âA lot of people just donât care anymore. They stopped going to church long ago because nothing they heard or experienced resonated with themâ the large numbers of people not involved in faith communities are not just waiting to be invited to church. They are passionately disinterested in the churchâ The fields are NOT filled with faithless people in need of the gospel. They are filled with people of deep spiritual integrity who simply cannot suffer the shallow message of the churches of their birth any longer.â (Pg. xii)
They continue, âAs pastors, we [realized that what]â we needed was a practical tool to bring together, reeducate, and equip thinking Christians to wrestle with the latest scholarshipâ It soon became clear that if we wanted it, we would have to produce it ourselvesâ the result was theLiving the QuestionsDVD seriesâ This book is an effort to expand the conversation even furtherâ With fewer and fewer people looking to church-sponsored studies or a person in a pulpit for guidance, it made sense to us to make the resources of the DVD series available in another format.â (Pg. xiii)
In the first chapter, they suggest, âOn any authentic spiritual journey, asking the hard questions is not only permitted, but necessary! What we learn along the way, through difficulties and disequilibrium, mistakes and challenges, discoveries and unlearnings, is that the process is whatâs important. The unanswerable questions asked in the company of fellow seekers along the way become a central part of the process of the deepening quest, the broadening understanding, and the journey beyond our otherwise limited horizons.â (Pg. 8)
They point out, âone of the most notable characteristics of the Judeo-Christian tradition has been its amazing flexibility in withstanding the changes and adaptations brought to them by cultures they encounter. The Bible itself is witness to the same event or idea being represented in a variety of theological interpretations, each of which was included in the canon of scripture despite obvious differences. Wrestling with those differences has always played a significant role in the history of â concepts of the Divine---and can again play a part in rethinking many of the staid theological ideas that have become stagnant and unhelpful in the twenty-first century.â (Pg.
