Braille, Brands and Questions!
At our first BBQ, we met with Andrew Flatres, a Braille Product Manager at HumanWare. https://www.humanware.com/en-international/
In this new Table Talk Extra episode, braille experts share their impressions and experiences from visiting SightCity in Frankfurt. They discuss a range of braille technologies and devices presented at the exhibition, including the products they explored, tested and found particularly interesting for braille users and professionals.
Please note that the products and devices mentioned in this discussion are not presented as advertisements or endorsements. They were selected informally, based on what the participants happened to see, explore and test during their visit to the exhibition.
This was the fourth session of the Expert Table Talks on Braille Displays, organized by the Braille Working Group of the European Blind Union. The session focused on creating content with braille displays, covering different file types, braille input methods, and braille tables for input and output across various devices and screen readers.

The third webinar in the European Blind Union’s Braille Working Group series focused on controlling your device with a braille display. The session explored practical ways of navigating smartphones and computers, using command keys and braille keyboard input, and making everyday device control more efficient through refreshable braille technology. Part of the “four C’s” concept, this webinar followed the sessions on connecting and consuming, and highlighted how braille displays can serve not only for reading, but also for active and independent control of digital devices.
After our highly successful introduction, where we untangled the web of possible connections between Braille displays and various devices, we now turn to actually reading and consuming, information on your Braille display.
The topics will include:
• What if the characters I see on my Braille display are not what I expect? Do I need to learn another Braille code, or is it simply the matter of adjusting the settings??
• What are all of these abbreviations taking up precious space on my Braille display? How can I customize them and reclaim some valuable display real estate?
• Is there a way to improve my reading speed? How can I become more efficient, especially when reading aloud?
This time, each of our panelists presented a few practical ideas, and then opened up the floor for comments, questions and suggestions of our participants.
In this first session, we have explored connecting your Braille display to various types of devices. We have examined existing connection methods and discussed their pros and cons. We tend to help you choose the best connection for your specific needs.
So come join us for our first expert table talk—and use your Braille display like a pro!
