John 6:35, 41-51

Much of what Jesus said in his  ministry provoked more murmuring than acceptance. This was true when he proclaimed that he is the "bread that has come down from heaven".  We are left with the choice to either join those who murmur in the face of this truth, or accept Jesus' invitation to feed on His word and Sacrament.

John 6:41-51

Everyday Manna

We've heard Jesus reference himself as "bread".  In this passage Jesus references himself as "the bread of life", and even equates it to the concept of "manna", which gave the Israelites sustenance in the wilderness.  God sent Jesus to be a type of sustenance that "manna" cannot meet.  He is the Savior of our souls.  This sermon will focus on the need for us to take that "sustenance" on a daily basis.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

John 6:1-21

In this text we see Jesus feeding the 5000, then walking on the water to save the disciples from the storm.  It seems that John wants to tie these stories together to make a point;  Jesus not only feeds our hunger on the green hillside but he also comes to rescue us from the raging storm.  His purpose is not just to "fill us" but to "save us:.

July 22 (Eighth Sunday after Pentecost)

Text: Mark 6:30-34, 53-56

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: ON SABBATH REST”

Theme: Jesus withdraws to a solitary place for some much needed rest. We are wired to believe that something is wrong with us we are not always “doing something”. Yet in the very beginning God commands us to set aside, “Sabbath rest”, a time to do nothing. This sermon will talk about what it means to take “Sabbath rest” and how important it is for our spiritual. emotional and physical health.

July 15 (Seventh Sunday after Pentecost)

Text: Matthew 13:24-30

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: What To Do With The Weeds”

Theme: Jesus tells a parable affectionately called, “The parable of the wheat and the tares”. This parable chides those who want to question who does and doesn’t go to heaven. The point of the parable: It’s Jesus job, not ours.

July 8 (Sixth Sunday after Pentecost)

Text: Mark 6:6b-13

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: ON WHAT WE DON’T NEED”

Theme: Jesus sends out the 72 with instructions on what they are to take and not take with them on the journey. This sermon will talk about things we often have to “give up” to be faithful in our following of Jesus.

July 1 (Fifth Sunday after Penecost)

Text: Matthew 22:15-21

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: ON PATRIOTISM AND THE CHURCH”

Theme: When asked if we should pay taxes, Jesus responds by saying, “Give unto Ceasar what is Ceasar’s and give to God what is God’s. This sermon will talk about the tension that arises sometimes between love of God and love of country.

June 24 (Fourth Sunday after Pentecost)

Text: Ephesians 4:25-5:2

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: ON DEALING WITH ANGER”

Theme: In this text Paul talks about anger. Many folks see anger as a sin, and yet Jesus himself got angry. This sermon will talk about different approaches to anger and how to deal with your own anger.

June 17 (Third Sunday after Pentecost)

Text: Mark 4:26-34

Title: “CONVERSATIONS: ON FAITH”

Theme: This parable talks about faith, and how even a tiny faith can move mountains. We often struggle with feeling as if we have “enough” faith, especially when we encounter mountains of despair in our lives. But Jesus reminds us that our faith is not something we do but it’s a seed that God plants within us, and with the proper nourishment, that seed will grow.
