Seems like Poe at least had a rudimentary understanding at what the Spanish Inquisition was about...it's unfortunate he failed to see the people around him using their power to abuse him as well.

Edgar Allan Poe was a complicated but good man, who wrote tales that have stayed with us for decades.  One of the stories that has always particularly stuck with me is The Pit and the Pendulum, and how the Spanish Inquisition could be so destructive, but also misremembered...kind of like Poe's peculiar life.
