  • The Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op Part 2
The dominant food system at present favours large-scale farmers producing food sold cheaply at supermarkets far away from where it was grown. The goal of the Co-op is to provide an alternative to this, building a supportive community of diverse organic farmers who lease land on a single farm and sell the produce to the local community. This is the second part of a two part interview. In last week's episode Katie described the Community Supported Agriculture model in which consumers commit to purchasing produce a season at a time, sharing the risk with the farmer. And also about the importance of setting up the enterprise as a co-operative in which growers commit to shared values. In this, the second part, Katie focuses on small farm viability. https://hofcoop.com.auhttps://www.sellardairy.com.au https://www.murnongmummas.com.auhttps://growgreatfruit.com https://theorchardkeepers.com.auhttps://openfoodnetwork.org.au/carrs-organic-fruit-tree-nursery/shop  RADIOTHON 2024SOUND ON FOR SOLIDARITY Thanks to all of you for your support of the show for the past year. Remember, your donations will help keep us going for another year. • The Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op with Katie Finlay
The Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op, on Djarra country, Central Victoria, is 'a collaboration of diverse organic farmers who lease land on a single farm at Harcourt'. The farm is owned by Katie Finlay whose family has been growing fruit in the area for three generations. Although the land is leased to farmers according to the usual legal arrangements, members act as a co-operative. On today's episode Katie explains how this model works. She discusses the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) system by which some of the produce is sold to the local community, and also some of the challenges faced by small scale farmers. Find out more:https://hofcoop.com.au https://www.sellardairy.com.au https://www.murnongmummas.com.auhttps://growgreatfruit.comhttps://theorchardkeepers.com.auhttps://openfoodnetwork.org.au/carrs-organic-fruit-tree-nursery/shop Up-coming on-line events at the Harcourt Organic Farming Co-operativeCo-op relaunch webinar, Thursday 6 June, 7-8pmJoin them to celebrate relaunching HOFC for the next iteration, including screening of their new short film, sharing of their new collaborative farming resources and interactive Q&AandTuesday 11 June, 7-8pm A smaller session for those seriously interested in joining the co-op or interested in finding out more. Go to https://hofcoop.com.au/ to register.Radiothon!
