Evidence continues to mount that lockdowns, the tool of choice among power-hungry politicians during COVID, may not have helped but made things worse. USC and the Rand Corporation examined data from 43 countries and all 50 states. The study notes, “We fail to find that shelter-in-place policies saved lives.” In fact, they actually contributed to an across the board increase in avoidable deaths. This is in part due to the fact that most COVID spread occurred at home, making shelter in place orders especially harmful. Politicians always tell us they can solve our problems if we just give them more power. The lesson from COVID: the more power we give to our elected officials, the more trouble they will cause for us. As Thomas Jefferson said, that government which governs least governs best.
