Locked On Commanders Hit - Quick Takes on the Washington Commanders

With starters who sat out against Miami expected to see the field, all eyes are on quarterback Jayden Daniels and the protection in front of him, especially given injuries to key offensive linemen like Laremy Tunsil and Nick Allegretti. Will the coaching staff risk exposing their franchise arm behind a patchwork line, or play it safe ahead of Week 1?

The Commanders’ running back room shines, with Rachaad White returning to practice, complementing the explosive Jacory Croskey-Merritt and potential thumper Kaytron Allen. Robert Henry Jr.’s preseason performance, Jeremy McNichols' reliability, and the addition of Craig Reynolds will keep competition fierce.

Will Styles’ elite athleticism translate into on-field impact, or does he still have to catch up mentally to match his physical gifts? All eyes are on how quickly he can adjust and become the dynamic linebacker Commanders fans envisioned with the seventh overall pick.

Meanwhile, Dorrance Armstrong’s return to practice signals promise for Washington’s pass rush, but he’s set to miss Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles due to suspension. Can new additions like Odafe Oweh, Kay-Levon Chase, and others ignite a stagnant pass rush? With Dan Quinn steering the defense, fresh faces and proven talent must deliver, especially with a formidable NFC East challenge looming.

As preseason game two approaches, the coaching staff faces tough choices: should they risk the banged-up starting lineup or play it safe after last year’s cautious approach failed to keep the team healthy?

Johnny Newton’s pec injury, which could be long-term, puts even more pressure on the defense and boosts the importance of offseason signing Charles Omenihu, while opportunity knocks for depth players like Ricky Barber to earn their spot. With lingering questions about continuity, preparation, and the true cost of preseason caution, will the Commanders be ready when the real games begin?

With Stefon Diggs joining the roster and an expanded arsenal of weapons, the Commanders’ offense is poised for serious production.

Training camp intensity and preseason snaps are under scrutiny, with the coaching staff pressured to prioritize full-speed reps—a lesson learned from last year's slow preseason. The upcoming preseason clash against the Detroit Lions looms as the first real test for this retooled Washington squad.

This decisive move could help stabilize a position that’s been a revolving door—seven kickers in two years—while offering Moody a chance to catch on elsewhere before the NFL season starts.

All attention now turns to quarterback Jayden Daniels as fans await news on whether he’ll take snaps in preseason action against the Detroit Lions. With memories of last season’s cautious approach and injuries fresh on everyone’s mind, the decision could set the tone for Daniels’ readiness and confidence. Will getting real-game reps silence outside noise, or does the risk outweigh the benefit as the franchise eyes a turnaround?

All eyes are on Jayden Daniels, who aims to bounce back after an injury-riddled season, but Marcus Mariota’s health looms large. With Mariota sidelined for the rest of preseason yet expected back for Week 1, his veteran experience could be pivotal—whether stepping in for Daniels or serving as the vital link between new offensive coordinator David Blough and the young quarterback.

Rookie debut buzz surrounds Sonny Styles, whose underwhelming showing against Miami’s offense has fans questioning expectations. Thrust into the “green dot” role and tasked with calling defensive plays, Styles had to navigate NFL speed and communication for the first time. Will his athleticism translate with more experience, or should concerns start to build about the number 7 pick? The answers to these questions could define Washington’s path this season.

Questions swirl over contract disputes, NIL rights, and the infamous number controversy involving Brian Kelly and Lane Kiffin. The drama threatens to overshadow Daniels’ historic college achievements, including his status as the highest-rated Heisman passer and one of only two SEC players to ever record a 3,500-1,000 season.

As Dan Quinn enters a pivotal year steering the Commanders, all eyes turn to whether Jayden Daniels—already battle-tested from adversity at Arizona State and LSU—can harness this disrespect as motivation. Can this narrative of doubters and disrespect be the edge Washington needs for a playoff push in 2026? The upcoming season promises to test the resolve of both quarterback and coach as they fight to change the narrative in D.C.
