The Dallas Cowboys defense just lost two critical pieces — and somebody has to step up FAST.
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down what the losses of DeMarvion Overshown and Malik Hooker mean for a Cowboys defense already searching for answers.
Overshown's absence creates a major communication question after his role wearing the green dot, while Hooker's fractured forearm removes veteran leadership from the Dallas secondary. Could Jayshawn Barham or Dee Winters take on a bigger role? And does this open the door for Caleb Downs to become even more important?
After allowing 165 rushing yards against the New York Giants, Dallas needs more than replacements — it needs someone to emerge as a defensive leader.

The Dallas Cowboys spent the offseason rebuilding their defense — so why did the New York Giants just run all over them?
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan examines the biggest concerns surrounding Christian Parker's defense after Dallas surrendered 165 rushing yards, struggled with communication and physicality, and committed costly penalties in its Week 1 loss.
With Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark and Von Miller brought in to transform this unit, expectations were MUCH higher. Now injuries to Malik Hooker and DeMarvion Overshown create even more questions heading forward.
Is Christian Parker's scheme the problem? Should he move upstairs to call the defense? Or did Week 1 expose a bigger weakness with the Cowboys' personnel?

The Dallas Cowboys promised a new identity in 2026. After an ugly Week 1 loss to the New York Giants, Cowboys Nation is wondering why it felt so familiar.
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down the biggest warning signs from Dallas' 0-1 start. Christian Parker's revamped Cowboys defense allowed 396 yards and 28 points as Jaxson Dart picked apart the secondary, while Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and the offense struggled to create explosive plays.
Add costly penalties, a massive time-of-possession disadvantage and injuries to Tyler Smith and Malik Hooker, and Dallas suddenly has plenty to fix before Week 2.
Was this simply a bad Week 1 performance — or did the Giants expose problems that could follow the Cowboys all season?

The Dallas Cowboys are 0-1 after a frustrating Week 1 loss to the New York Giants, and an offense loaded with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens has some serious questions to answer.
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down what went wrong for the Cowboys offense, why CeeDee and Pickens combined for just 72 receiving yards, and whether Dak Prescott, Brian Schottenheimer or the offensive line deserves the most blame.
Plus, nine penalties for 90 yards created another major concern: discipline. From costly fourth-quarter mistakes to an inconsistent running game, Dallas left Cowboys Nation wondering whether Week 1 was simply a bad night — or an early warning sign.
Who deserves the MOST blame for the Cowboys' Week 1 loss?

The Dallas Cowboys defense FAILED its first test of the 2026 NFL season.
On this postgame edition of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan reacts to a brutal defensive performance against Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants — and explains why defensive coordinator Christian Parker needs to make immediate adjustments.
Christian Parker called Week 1 “graduation day” after an entire offseason installing his new Cowboys defense.
Well… Dallas failed the exam.
Jaxson Dart completed 23-of-29 passes with three touchdowns and ZERO interceptions as the Giants piled up 396 total yards and controlled possession for nearly 37 minutes.
And James has one immediate suggestion for Christian Parker:
GET UPSTAIRS.
Dallas invested heavily in rebuilding this defense around Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary, Von Miller, Caleb Downs, Malachi Lawrence and Shavon Revel Jr.
But against the Giants, Dart looked far too comfortable.
Dallas wanted to stop the run, create third-and-long situations, disguise coverages and force the young quarterback into mistakes.
Instead, New York controlled the football, ran 68 offensive plays and consistently kept Dart in manageable situations.
Cam Skattebo rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, while Dart added another 56 yards with his legs. The Cowboys couldn't consistently create the obvious passing situations needed to unleash their revamped pass rush.
“Christian Parker called this graduation day. The Cowboys defense just got sent back to summer school.”
Then there are serious questions in the Cowboys secondary.
Malik Hooker exited the game with an injury, giving Dallas another situation to monitor moving forward.
But the biggest problem wasn't Malik Nabers.
It was Isaiah Likely.
Likely torched the Cowboys defense for eight receptions, 78 yards and TWO touchdowns, repeatedly creating problems for Dallas in coverage. Nabers finished with six catches for 69 yards, but the Cowboys never found an answer for Likely.
Was it the scheme?
Communication?
Linebacker and safety coverage?
Or does Dallas have a bigger personnel problem than Cowboys fans expected?
James breaks down what went wrong for Christian Parker, why Jaxson Dart was able to play so comfortably, the Cowboys' inability to get off the field, Malik Hooker's injury and the defensive changes Dallas needs to make immediately.
One game doesn't define an entire season.
But after spending an offseason talking about how different this Cowboys defense would be, Week 1 was a major reality check.
Cowboys Nation — what worries you MORE after Week 1: Christian Parker's defensive scheme or the Cowboys' personnel?
And should Parker call the next game from upstairs?

The Dallas Cowboys are BACK.
No more training camp. No more preseason. No more roster projections. It's officially Week 1 as Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys travel to MetLife Stadium for a Sunday Night Football showdown with Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants.
On this full-game pregame edition of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan gives his FINAL Cowboys vs. Giants prediction, the three matchups that could decide the game and his pick for the Cowboys player who could TAKE OVER Sunday night.
It starts with the Dallas offensive line.
Tyler Smith is unavailable, and the Cowboys now have to protect Dak Prescott against a dangerous New York Giants defensive front. James explains why Brian Schottenheimer needs to use the running game, quick passes, screens and play action to prevent the Giants pass rush from taking over the game.
Because if Dak gets time, Dallas has weapons EVERYWHERE.
CeeDee Lamb.
George Pickens.
Jake Ferguson.
KaVontae Turpin.
Ryan Flournoy.
The Giants can't simply focus their entire defense on one Cowboys playmaker anymore.
Then there's one of the most fascinating matchups of Week 1: Jaxson Dart against Christian Parker's new Dallas Cowboys defense.
Can Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, Rashan Gary, Von Miller and the Cowboys defensive front force Dart into uncomfortable situations? Can Caleb Downs and the Dallas secondary contain Malik Nabers? And can the Cowboys force the Giants into third-and-long situations where Parker can unleash his pass rush?
Turnovers could ultimately decide everything.
Dak Prescott doesn't need to play superhero football. Dallas needs its franchise quarterback to protect the football, distribute it to his weapons and let the Cowboys' improved roster do the rest.
Then James makes his FINAL prediction.
Dallas Cowboys 27, New York Giants 20.
And the player of the game?
George Pickens.
James predicts Pickens finishes with 6+ receptions, 90+ receiving yards and a touchdown as New York's attention on CeeDee Lamb creates opportunities for Dak Prescott to attack with his other star receiver.
If the Cowboys are serious about becoming an NFC playoff contender in 2026, this is the type of game they need to win.
Dak Prescott vs. Jaxson Dart.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens vs. the Giants secondary.
Malik Nabers vs. the new Cowboys defense.
Cowboys vs. Giants.
Sunday Night Football.
Week 1 is HERE.
Cowboys Nation — lock in your prediction BEFORE kickoff. Who wins, what's the final score, and who is your Cowboys player of the game?

“Graduation day” has arrived for the Dallas Cowboys defense.
On this defensive pregame edition of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down Christian Parker's new-look Cowboys defense and the biggest keys to stopping Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers and the New York Giants in Week 1.
Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker called Sunday night “graduation day” for his defense after an entire offseason spent installing a new scheme, building chemistry and creating a new identity.
Now it's time to pass the test.
And for Dallas, the defensive game plan starts with one priority: STOP THE RUN.
The Cowboys cannot allow the Giants to protect Jaxson Dart with a comfortable running game and manageable down-and-distance situations. Dallas needs to force New York's young quarterback to win the game with his arm — and then unleash a revamped defensive front built to create pressure.
Quinnen Williams. Kenny Clark. Rashan Gary. Von Miller. Donovan Ezeiruaku. Malachi Lawrence.
The Cowboys have invested heavily in rebuilding this defense, and Week 1 is the first opportunity to see whether that investment can translate into regular-season production.
James explains why Dallas doesn't need to blitz Jaxson Dart on every play to make him uncomfortable. With Quinnen Williams creating pressure inside and Gary, Miller and the Cowboys pass rush attacking from the edge, Christian Parker can disguise coverages, rotate defenders and make Dart constantly question where the next pressure is coming from.
“The best way to beat a rookie quarterback isn't hitting him every play. It's making him THINK he's about to get hit every play.”
Then there's Malik Nabers.
If the Cowboys believe their secondary can become one of the strengths of this defense, Nabers provides the perfect Week 1 test for DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel Jr., Caleb Downs, Jalen Thompson and Malik Hooker.
And all eyes will be on Caleb Downs.
The first-round rookie gets his first regular-season NFL action under the lights on Sunday Night Football in Cowboys vs. Giants. James breaks down what he wants to see from Downs and why the rookie doesn't need to become a superstar immediately — he needs to show that the moment isn't too big for him.
Stop the run.
Contain Malik Nabers.
Pressure Jaxson Dart without relying on the blitz.
Create turnovers.
Get off the field on third down.
The offseason is over. The preseason is over. Christian Parker's new Cowboys defense finally gets its first REAL test.

Dak Prescott has everything he needs. CeeDee Lamb. George Pickens. Jake Ferguson. KaVontae Turpin. Ryan Flournoy.
Now the Dallas Cowboys offense has NO EXCUSES.
On this offensive pregame edition of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down the biggest keys for Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.
It all starts with one major question: Can Dallas protect Dak Prescott?
The Cowboys will be without Tyler Smith, forcing Dallas to adjust an offensive line that was already one of the biggest questions entering the 2026 NFL season. Against a Giants defensive front capable of creating serious pressure, protecting Dak could determine everything Dallas wants to accomplish offensively.
Because if Prescott has time, the Cowboys have weapons everywhere.
CeeDee Lamb remains one of the NFL's premier receivers. George Pickens gives Dallas another legitimate game-changing threat. Jake Ferguson can attack the middle of the field, while KaVontae Turpin and Ryan Flournoy give Brian Schottenheimer even more options.
If New York doubles CeeDee, find Pickens.
If the Giants roll coverage toward Pickens, feed CeeDee.
If New York sits in two-high coverage to protect against both receivers, run the football.
James explains why Brian Schottenheimer's job isn't to pretend Tyler Smith isn't missing — it's to build an offensive game plan that makes his absence hurt LESS.
Then it's time for the Cowboys player James believes could TAKE OVER Week 1: George Pickens.
Pickens has already called himself and CeeDee Lamb the best wide receiver duo in the NFL. Now he gets his first opportunity of the regular season to prove it.
Deep balls. Contested catches. Back-shoulder throws. Red-zone opportunities.
If the Giants build their defensive game plan around stopping CeeDee Lamb, Dak Prescott needs to make them pay by getting Pickens involved.
And if Pickens hits an explosive play early, the entire Cowboys offense could open up.
Protect Dak. Establish the run. Get Pickens involved vertically. Feed CeeDee when New York adjusts. Finish drives with touchdowns.
Dallas finally has an offense where defenses may have to choose how they want to lose.

The Dallas Cowboys have NO EXCUSES against the New York Giants in Week 1.
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down the good news and the REALLY bad news for Dallas heading into Sunday Night Football.
The bad news is significant: Tyler Smith is officially headed to injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his injured thumb, leaving the Cowboys without one of the foundational pieces of their offensive line to begin the 2026 NFL season.
T.J. Bass is expected to step in at left guard, while Dallas has also added veteran offensive line insurance as it prepares for a Giants pass rush featuring Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Abdul Carter.
And that creates the biggest question for the Cowboys offense:
Can Dallas protect Dak Prescott?
Because the Cowboys have the weapons.
Dak has CeeDee Lamb.
He has George Pickens.
He has Jake Ferguson.
Dallas has invested in its offensive line and added Broderick Jones.
But none of those weapons matter if Dak doesn't have enough time to get them the football.
James breaks down why Tyler Smith's absence is a legitimate concern — but also why Cowboys fans shouldn't accept it as an excuse if Dallas struggles against New York.
Because outside of Smith, the Cowboys are entering Week 1 in remarkably good shape.
And if Dallas really believes it can contend in 2026, this is exactly the type of football game it needs to win.
Then it's time to talk about the new-look Cowboys defense.
Quinnen Williams. Kenny Clark. Rashan Gary. Von Miller. Caleb Downs. Shavon Revel Jr. Malachi Lawrence.
Dallas spent the offseason rebuilding this defense.
Now it's time to PROVE it.
The Cowboys get an immediate test against Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers and the Giants offense. James explains why Dallas needs to make life miserable for New York's young quarterback and why this is the perfect opportunity for the Cowboys' revamped defense to make its first statement of the season.
Offensively, the pressure is on Dak Prescott as well.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens have the potential to become one of the NFL's most dangerous wide receiver combinations, and Week 1 is their first opportunity to show Cowboys Nation exactly what this offense can become.
No excuses.
No offseason projections.
It's time to play football.
Can the Cowboys overcome the Tyler Smith injury and take care of business against the Giants on Sunday Night Football?

The Dallas Cowboys could be ready to make a BIG move.
On this episode of Locked On Cowboys Hit Podcast, host James Duncan breaks down the latest Cowboys trade rumors after Jerry Jones confirmed that Dallas is “in play” when it comes to potential trades.
And Jerry didn't just leave it there.
Jones indicated that if the Cowboys make a move, it would likely come on the defensive side of the football — a HUGE development considering Dallas has more than $30 million in available cap space after restructuring the contracts of Kenny Clark, DaRon Bland and Jake Ferguson.
So what does this mean for the Cowboys?
Dallas has already addressed the offensive side of the roster by acquiring former first-round offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cowboys also have Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens and Jake Ferguson leading an offense that Jerry Jones believes is in a good position.
That makes the defense the obvious area to watch.
James breaks down why Dallas should be monitoring the cornerback market, including whether a player like Christian Gonzalez could become a realistic target if the Cowboys decide to make a major move.
But it doesn't necessarily have to be Gonzalez.
The Cowboys could potentially target a cornerback, edge rusher, defensive tackle or linebacker depending on what the first few weeks of the season reveal.
And that's what makes having more than $30 million in cap space so important.
Dallas doesn't have to make a move immediately.
The Cowboys can watch the roster.
They can identify weaknesses.
They can wait for injuries around the league.
And if a major opportunity becomes available, Jerry Jones now has the financial flexibility to make a move.
James also explains why the Cowboys could become MORE aggressive if they start the season strong. If Dallas is sitting at 3-1 or 4-1 and looks like a legitimate playoff contender, spending draft capital for an impact defensive player could suddenly make a lot more sense.
The Cowboys have already shown they're willing to move draft capital to improve the current roster after trading for Broderick Jones.
Now Jerry Jones has given Cowboys Nation another reason to watch the trade market.
Plus, James breaks down the latest Cowboys prediction market on Kalshi, with Dallas currently trading at a 59% probability to beat the New York Giants in Week 1.
Cowboys Nation — if Dallas makes ONE major trade this season, what position should Jerry Jones target?
Cornerback?
Edge rusher?
Defensive tackle?
Linebacker?
Or should Dallas keep its draft picks and roll with the current roster?
