Locked On Pelicans Hit - Quick Takes on the New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans kick off their NBA season with bold expectations as Zion Williamson aims to anchor the team following an impressive 35-game streak and newfound maturity. With Williamson striving to expand his offensive arsenal beyond the rim, the Pelicans’ hopes for their first All-Star since 2022-23 ride high, and Trey Murphy’s sharp shooting and strong stat line from last year make him another prime All-Star contender.

Jeremiah Fears has emerged as a potential breakout 3-point shooter, impressing in the preseason and poised to become the Pelicans’ second-best threat from deep. With increased defensive responsibilities for Murphy, key offseason improvements from Fears, and lineup changes impacting Saddiq Bey’s role, the Pelicans look to improve their playoff chances. Can New Orleans find their next All-Star and develop into an elite three-point shooting team this season?

The New Orleans Pelicans approach opening night with intrigue around their starting lineup, as Dejounte Murray, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, Zion Williamson, and Yves Missi are top candidates. Will the Pelicans trust the veteran lineup, or is a shake-up featuring Fears and Murray in the backcourt on the horizon?

Pelicans fans are eager to see Zion Williamson's physical evolution, Trey Murphy’s offensive workload, and the defensive impact of Yves Misi, whom Jamal Mosley has publicly challenged for Defensive Player of the Year honors. Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen are poised to play pivotal roles in the New Orleans Pelicans' evolving lineup as they enter a season balancing player development with playoff ambitions. The spotlight is on Fears, who turns 20 and looks to translate his scoring flair and improved team play into more minutes, with hopes of reclaiming a spot in the starting lineup after facing early challenges and working on his game.

Derik Queen’s unique skillset generates debate—could he become a game-changing big man or is he stuck behind Zion Williamson due to fit and spacing concerns? The discussion explored Queen’s versatility between the 4 and 5, the need for enhanced defense, and how both sophomores fit into Jamahl Mosley’s system as the Pelicans look for long-term contributors amid a competitive Western Conference. Can these young first-round picks lift New Orleans closer to NBA playoff contention?
