Locked On Reds - Daily Podcast On The Cincinnati Reds

Major League Baseball is looking to cut more jobs in the minor leagues which would erase the possibilities of a Jose Altuve player coming out of nowhere to be a star. Jeff and Steve talk with Doug Gray about that and they break down just what damage further contraction would do to the game of baseball. They also look at some prospects in the Cincinnati Reds organization that you may not already be watching, but will most certainly be talking about at the end of the year.

Hunter Greene was rated high, but not high enough. Nick Lodolo slid down some rankings, though he is healthy now. Jeff and Steve dive into some prospect rankings with Doug Gray from RedsMinorLeagues.com and Redlegnation.com, on today's podcast. They also talk about Jose Barrero and to shortstop or not to shortstop. They then dive into the news that MLB is looking to downsize the minor leagues, even more, and why that is a bad idea.

As the report date for pitchers and catchers comes and goes, it is painfully obvious the lack of urgency, from both the owners and the players, when it comes to ending the MLB Lockout. That lack of urgency threatens Opening Day which threatens the sport of baseball. Jeff and Steve look at what this lack of urgency is doing to the game and why they are apprehensive about Opening Day actually happening on March 31st. They also talk about how the perception of the Cincinnati Reds isn't good, even within Reds country and why it sure seems like Bob Castellini's group should sell the team.

With the Universal DH official, Jeff and Steve discuss how that will affect the Cincinnati Reds. They talk about why David Bell has to be one of the most excited people about the Universal DH and how he might utilize it. They also look at players like Mike Moustakas, Joey Votto, Tyler Stephenson, and Jesse Winker and how it may help them. Jeff and Steve then do a draft, three players each, of Reds pitchers who were good hitters. Names like Michael Lorenzen, Bronson Arroyo, and Mike Leake come up. There are a few you may not expect, though.

There will be a Universal Designated Hitter. There will not be draft pick compensation. There will be a draft lottery. There is no change in Spring Training. All of this sounds nice, but Jeff and Steve find it to be a rope-a-dope. They explain why what the commissioner said struck them as a veiled sort of posturing to put the players in a position where not accepting the owners' next proposal on Saturday paints them as villains. They also briefly touch on what they will miss about pitchers hitting.

Hunter Greene looks to be the impact pitcher we've hoped for. Questions about Nick Lodolo abound. Jeff and Steve look at the reports Keith Law wrote in The Athletic about the Top-20 Cincinnati Reds prospects. Who moved up the rankings? Who fell? The Reds have so much talent up the middle of the field as we all are excited about Elly De La Cruz and Matt McLain, but don't miss Jay Allen and his talent! Also, could Tyler Stephenson move to first base in a few years with guys like Mat Nelson and Daniel Vellojin on their way up?

The Cincinnati Reds finished third in the NL Central, despite a record above .500. Jeff is joined by Steve, who is on the beach, to talk about why there doesn't seem to be much change in the way the division currently looks. He then talks with Ethan Smith, Locked On Pirates, about if that will change once the Lockout is lifted and teams get to work on trades and signing free agents. They also look at why the Reds and Pirates don't figure to be chasing pennants in 2022 but why they're only a few years away from being the favorites for the crown.

The Hall of Fame voting process has come and gone and we, once again, see that it is broken. Jeff and Steve discuss their displeasure with hoe the Hall of Fame vote went down to begin today's show. They then look at how the Cincinnati Reds are feeling the pressure of the lockout mores than other teams. With the way the Cincinnati Bengals are playing (in the Super Bowl, in case you hadn't heard) and the absence of any news about the major league team, this lockout only serves to continue damaging fans' view of the Reds. They then talk about two memories from 2021 that make them smile upon recalling them. A walk-off win by Tyler Stephenson comes to mind, as does Lucas Sims and some inclement weather.

The Cincinnati Bengals are in the Super Bowl which means the Cincinnati Reds are going to have a good year. Jeff and Steve break down the connection between the Bengals playoff success in the past and the Reds success in their season that follows. They also talk about Ken Rosenthal's report on the ongoing rift between the players and the owners and where we go from here. They also look at the Seattle Mariners and take a look at some impact trade targets the Reds could pursue.

The Chattanooga Lookouts never felt the pressure of the reported chopping block they were on, when MLB was cutting minor league teams. Larry Ward talks about the confidence they had and the support the Reds gave them to stay affiliated. He also talks about an emotional story about when his father finally realized what baseball meant to Larry, with the help of Joe DiMaggio.

The Chattanooga Lookouts were, reportedly, among the long list of teams that were slated to be cut from MLB affiliation. Larry Ward tells us why that never affected them and why he believes it was more scare tactics than anything real.

Larry Ward began his broadcasting career in the late 1970’s and left home in order to pursue it. His dad never really understood why he wanted to pursue baseball broadcasting, until one day when he met Joe DiMaggio.
