Locked On Sabres - Daily Podcast On The Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres and Tampa Bay Lightning played one of the best hockey games we've seen played in a decade, and it certainly was the best one played at KeyBank Center. The Sabres crowd was electric from start to finish in an atmosphere that rivals the 2006 playoffs. It was loud from beginning to end. The game featured over 100 penalty minutes, most sparked by Tampa players going after Sabres players with dirty plays, especially attacking Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson. The Sabres answered the bell defending their best players. We also got crazy comebacks, from the Lightning's three goal comeback in the 2nd period, to the Sabres two goal comeback in the 3rd to win the game. It was an incredible game from Josh Doan, Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and plenty of other players. One difference in the game was Lindy Ruff getting his guys to play the game, while Jon Cooper could never get a handle on his.

The Buffalo Sabres have made their first couple trades before the NHL trade deadline, landing depth defensemen Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from the Winnipeg Jets. Two enormous defenseman who figure to play on the Sabres third pair going forward. Despite adding defensive depth, neither player projects to help the Sabres much come postseason time. Stanley is a rare combination of size, physicality, meanness, but also very poor defensive performance. Did Jarmo Kekalainen only acquire Luke Schenn to help trade for his brother Brayden Schenn? Plus, the Sabres get center Sam Carrick from the New York Rangers, helping them in one area they struggle a lot, the face-off circle. Is Carrick going to be the guy Lindy Ruff puts on the ice late in games to close out a lead?

The Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues agreed on a trade that would send Colton Parayko to the Sabres in exchange for prospect defenseman Radim Mrtka and a 1st round pick, but Parayko exercised his no-trade clause to block the move. The reporting is he will only waive his clause to stay out west on a team like Anaheim or Los Angeles. How bad a look is this for the Sabres? Fans are not happy that the team still finds themselves in a situation where it's hard to convince players to come to Buffalo. Jarmo Kekäläinen very clearly is trying to make a big trade by Friday's NHL trade deadline. If it's not going to be Parayko, and it's not going to be Robert Thomas, who else is out there? Is there another Blue? What about Devils defenseman Simon Nemec? There is a very real chance the biggest trade the Sabres make is for Rasmus Ristolainen.

The Buffalo Sabres were in hot pursuit of Blues #1 center Robert Thomas and still could end up pulling off the trade, despite reports that talks have cooled for the time being. Sneaky Joe's favorite trade idea could end up coming true! There is some talk of an even bigger MEGA trade idea that would include Thomas and Colton Parayko coming to Buffalo in the same deal. Is Jarmo swinging too big and is it risking acquiring Thomas, by chasing a defenseman at the same time? What the trade pursuit proves is that Kekäläinen is not just showing up to the playoffs to take part, he's showing up to take over, and shoot for the Stanley Cup. Plus, the Sabres win over the Golden Knights was a tale of two halves. A dominant start, followed by a flat end, that still results in two points.

With just a few days to go until the NHL trade deadline, there's a good amount of debate about just how aggressive Jarmo Kekäläinen should be. With a report that they have "kicked the tires" on Blues defenseman Justin Faulk, it's the first tidbit that makes us think the Sabres could acquire a big fish. Faulk is a top pair defenseman that could give the Sabres a dominant shutdown pairing with Owen Power, but it would likely kick Bo Byram out of the top four. Plus, Sneaky Joe doubles down on why the Sabres should be all-in for Blues center Robert Thomas, who the Montreal Canadiens are reportedly after. Why should Montreal be in on that idea, but not Buffalo? Plus, will Sabres fans boo Jack Eichel when they face the Golden Knights? Vegas is limping into Buffalo, and the Sabres have a very good shot at taking advantage.

The Buffalo Sabres are in need of a depth defenseman ahead of Friday's NHL trade deadline. There are lots and lots of ideas, some of which are former Sabres, including Rasmus Ristolainen. It's not gone great for Risto in Philadelphia, but could finally being placed in a protected role mean better results for him on a third pair? With Marc Bergevin in Toronto tonight to watch the Flyers, he could be on the Sabres radar, and so could Brandon Carlo. Could the Maple Leafs defenseman be available to play that same third pair role in Buffalo? Plus, a look at two giant defenseman in Seattle's Jamie Oleksiak and Winnipeg's Logan Stanley, one of which Sneaky Joe has completely soured on. And why Zach Whitecloud of the Flames might be the best idea out of any of them. With Conor Timmins almost ready to return, is it possible the Sabres don't make a trade and just trust Timmins to step back into that depth role?

The Buffalo Sabres have come out of the Olympic break firing on all cylinders, winning all three games on the road. Most impressive is a road win against the East's best Tampa Bay Lightning, after playing the night before, by a score of 6-2! In one of their best wins of the season, the Sabres proved that this team is capable of achieving more than squeaking into the playoffs. They proved they can give the Lightning a run for their money if they meet in the postseason. Some sites now have the Sabres as high as 97% to make the playoffs! Are we willing to talk like they are going to make it yet? Josh Norris breaks out with two goals, Rasmus Dahlin has one of his best games in a while, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen continues to shut the door. Plus, Zach Metsa has some historically good numbers following a two point night for the third pair defenseman.

One week away from the NHL trade deadline and the Buffalo Sabres have yet to be involved in many rumors. What will Jarmo Kekäläinen go after on his first big day as Sabres GM? If it's a forward, the likes of Owen Tippett, Nazem Kadri, Vincent Trocheck, and Jake DeBrusk are all good forwards who are available. Which of the four is the best idea? Sneaky Joe breaks down what each guy offers, but also what the risk is on each. Tippett is the youngest, but has the longest contract. Does that scare us? Is Kadri too old at 35 years old to be worth a move? And would DeBrusk be the powerplay savior the Sabres need? Plus, why Evander Kane is THE WORST deadline move the Sabres could make.

The Buffalo Sabres got back at it with a victory in New Jersey, led by a two point effort by Tage Thompson. A great shot on the Sabres' first goal, and a great pass to Peyton Krebs on the game-winning goal, Tage was a direct contributor on the Sabres' only two goals of the game. And on the game winner, Tage stripped Jack Hughes, his Team USA teammate. Krebs answered the bell playing on the top line, something he's had decent success at all season long. Mattias Samuelsson was dominant with some crazy good shot stats that prove it from the win. HOWEVER, the Sabres powerplay is still abysmal. Is there anything they can do to save it? Joe brings up a couple of interesting trade ideas, including Jake DeBrusk and Patrik Laine.

The Buffalo Sabres have a five point lead on a playoff spot coming out of the Olympic break and begin with a road game against a bad New Jersey Devils team. Are the Devils as bad as their record says? With Tage Thompson ready to go, Josh Norris, and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen ready to go the Sabres are equipped to get the win and pad their lead over Columbus and Washington. Plus, Joe loves Noah Ostlund to score not just one goal, but TWO GOALS tonight playing on a great line with Norris and Josh Doan. And why we should be rooting for the Lightning and the Flyers as the NHL returns to action.
