Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

On today’s episode of Locked On Sharks, JD Young is joined by draft analyst Tony Ferrari to take a deep dive into one of the most fascinating prospects in the upcoming NHL Draft: Alberts Smits. The Liiga defenseman has been climbing draft boards, and Tony explains why he currently has Smits ranked as his top defenseman in the class. At 6’3” with strong mobility and a physical edge, Smits brings a rare blend of size, skating, and confidence, along with a fearless mentality shaped by playing against men in Europe. The episode explores his performances at the World Juniors and Olympics, his ability to impact the game in all three zones, and what makes his mix of defensive reliability and aggressive, “cowboy-style” offense so intriguing. JD and Tony also break down his long-term projection, including comparisons to high-end NHL defensemen, and discuss whether Smits has the upside to become a true number-one blueliner.

The conversation also shifts to team-building strategy and the realities of draft-day decisions, including whether teams like the San Jose Sharks should prioritize need or stick to best player available, and how realistic trading down from a top pick actually is. Tony shares insight into several major risers in the 2026 draft class, including Viggo Bjork and Oscar Hemming, along with Jaxon Cover, a unique prospect with an unconventional path and plenty of upside. From detailed scouting breakdowns to big-picture draft philosophy, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the players and decisions that could shape the future of an NHL franchise.
