Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

After last week's major trade that brought Yaroslav Askarov to the San Jose Sharks, Emma Lingan and Ann Kimmel of Locked on Predators join to examine the fallout for both franchises. We start by discussing how the Nashville Predators made the best of a bad situation and acquired two players who can help their future and how the Preds' cap situation made it difficult for this to be an NHL trade. Next, why does this trade cap off a massive summer by Mike Grier and the Sharks, and are maturity issues why Askarov lost his job during the playoffs in Milwaukee? Finally, how does this trade affect each franchise this upcoming season and their short term future?

General Manager Mike Grier caps off a massive offseason by trading for one of the best goalie prospects available, Yaroslav Askarov, from the Nashville Predators. Start with why this is such a huge win for the Sharks, as they solved one of the biggest issues in their prospect pool by acquiring the Russian prospect without giving up a big-name prospect. Also, consider what Askarov brings to  San Jose and why he perfectly fits the timeline.

With training camp right around the corner, who are some professional tryout (PTO) options for the San Jose Sharks? Look at two forwards, Dominik Kubalík and old friend Steven Lorentz, and what they could bring to the forward group. Then, examine two defensemen who could help on the blue line with Tyson Barrie and Justin Schultz, and which of the two makes more sense. Finally, could Kevin Lankinen solve the Sharks' need for a third goalie?

Two teams who are knee-deep in their rebuilds, the San Jose Sharks and the Columbus Blue Jackets, who makes the playoffs first? Jay Forster of Locked on Blue Jackets joins as we examine both approaches. We start with the Sharks and Mike Grier and his commitment to tearing down and building from the foundation. Then, look at how the Blue Jackets were reluctant to move on from their popular players and the work they have going forward. Finally, examine which teams are built for future success and who makes the playoffs first.

The San Jose Sharks are reportedly interested in the services of one of the best goalie prospects, Yaroslav Askarov. Start with why Askarov has asked for a trade from the Nashville Predators and who Askarov is as a player. Then, why does it make a ton of sense for the Sharks to look to acquire Askarov? Finally, consider why this trade feels like a hockey trade instead of a picks and prospects trade between the Sharks and the Predators since they are in a win-now mode.

What should we expect from Will Smith in his first season with the San Jose Sharks? Start by looking at his expected role with the Sharks and why he should have plenty of opportunity to get playing time. Then, examine players in similar situations to Smith, top 10 picks who played one college season after their draft, and how they performed in their final NCAA and rookie NHL seasons. Finally, analyze the averages of those players and what are realistic scoring expectations for Will Smith in his first full NHL season.

How does ESPN project the goaltending tandem of Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek to perform this season with the San Jose Sharks? Start with Blackwood and if a projected dip in stats is warranted for him as the Sharks are expected to take a step forward this season. Then, Vanecek is projected to have more games played than Blackwood. Does that make sense for the Sharks? Finally, who else is in the mix to be in the net this season, and how should the starts be divided up?
