Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks have fired Head Coach David Quinn after two seasons. React to why the news was initially surprising, why it makes sense for Mike Grier and the Sharks to move on now, and how important the next hire is for the Sharks so they don't become the next perpetually rebuilding team. Next, what did Mike Grier say in his media availability, why Quinn's record wasn't the deciding factor in the move, and if this was more about connecting with the players in the dressing room? Also, examine John McCarthy's future and other nuggets from Mike Grier's availability. Finally, explore five potential replacements for the San Jose Sharks head coaching position, including Ryan Warsofsky, David Carle, and Jay Woodcroft.

It's time for the first Locked on Sharks NHL Mock Draft. Using the FC Hockey Mock Draft simulator, take a crack at three different versions of the first two rounds, where the Sharks would target a forward at 14 with the Pittsburgh Penguins pick and then try and add defense with their picks in the second round. Then, what would the mock draft look like if the San Jose Sharks targeted a defenseman with the Penguin's pick? Finally, what would a pure best-player available mock draft look like where the Sharks take the highest-rated player on the board, regardless of position?

The San Jose Sharks enter the 2024 offseason with several big questions as they look to build after one of the worst seasons in modern NHL history. Look at three big questions that Mike Grier and the Sharks face this offseason, including how they infuse more quality NHL talent onto the roster. Discuss why it's important for Grier to add quality veteran pieces this offseason and the latest news on whether Will Smith will sign his ELC.  Then, examine the next big question about the Sharks: how do they handle the questions around Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic? Start with Couture and why, despite positive expectations around Couture's future, the Sharks need to prepare for the worst-case scenario and then examine if buying out Vlasic is a viable option as the Sharks look to relieve the logjam on the blueline. Finally, the Sharks should ask if the right people are in the right situation at the right time, with Sharks head coach David Quinn and San Jose Barracuda head coach John McCarthy.

San Jose Sharks goalie Devin Cooley joins the show to discuss his path back to San Jose. We start with the craziness of the past month, who his favorite player growing up was, and who is on his goalie Mt. Rushmore. We discuss being a walk-on at the University of Denver, taking advantage of every opportunity, and his early days in the AHL and ECHL with Nashville and Florida. We also converse about the trade that brought him to San Jose, winning his first game, if Thomas Speer is a wizard and the potential of an extension with the Sharks. Finally, we get to know Devin off the ice and learn about his flexibility, owning a rabbit, and socks with skates.

Then, we examine his timeline before he jumps to the NHL, where he would fit into the Sharks prospect pool and a comparison between Helenius and Mikael Granlund. Finally, how does Alex stack up the top 5 in the NHL Draft, and what are his thoughts on some of the defensemen in the class, including Zeev Buium.

With the NHL playoffs almost decided, what is the scenario for the San Jose Sharks to get the best possible pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins? Look at how the Sharks can still get pick number twelve heading into the NHL Draft lottery and what that would require from a slew of Eastern Conference teams. Then, with the San Jose Sharks announcing their yearly awards, what did my ballot look like? Discuss why Mackenzie Blackwood was my choice for player of the year and how I would rank the San Jose Sharks' top three prospects seasons. Finally, also examine the San Jose Barracuda's awards and why Ethan Cardwell should have been considered the top prospect for the Barracuda based on the season he has had.

The San Jose Sharks have officially claimed the title as the worst team in the NHL with their 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild. With the loss, they've locked up the top odds to win the NHL Draft lottery and the right to draft presumed first-overall pick Macklin Celebrini. Start by discussing how this was one of the season's goals, and while it was a long and tough season for the Sharks, it was the right decision. Then, Will Smith finished his freshman season at Boston College with a 2-0 loss to Denver in the National Championship. What should he do next? Discuss his last game, how he almost had two goals, and why jumping to the NHL makes sense. Finally, the Sharks lost largely on Saturday night to the Minnesota Wild due to a second-period collapse. Look at the numbers behind the game, Collin Graf's usage, and if this was Mackenzie Blackwood's last start.
