Locked On Stars - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Stars

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill was recognized in Nashville on Wednesday night as the NHL’s GM of the year for the 2022-2023 season. This is a much-deserved honor as Nill has done some great work to put the Stars on a great trajectory. Today Dane breaks down one of Nill’s riskier decisions when he traded the Stars 2023 first round pick for defenseman Nils Lundkvist. Was this move worth it? Are we being too hard on Lundkvist in his development process?

The Dallas Stars have announced a new contract for forward Evgenii Dadonov. The contract will last two seasons and will be worth $4.5 million ($2.25 million AAV). Dadonov was a key piece for the Stars during their run to the western conference final. While keeping Dadonov is great for the team, it means that there may be some other players who the team will be unable to keep for cap reasons. Dane also discusses Jason Robertson’s selection to the 2022-2023 NHL first all-star team and Wyatt Johnston’s selection to the 2022-2023 NHL all-rookie team.

It’s no secret that the Dallas Stars are hoping to improve their blue line this offseason. Unfortunately, the options for free agent defensemen aren’t necessarily great. However, the Vancouver Canucks just added another name to this list after they bought-out Oliver Ekman-Larsson. OEL is now a free agent and can sign with any NHL club on July 1st. Today, Dane dives into the pros and cons of pursuing a player like Ekman-Larsson. He may not cost a lot, but is he worth taking a risk on? Are there better options out there?

Alex DeBrincat is on his way out of Ottawa and the Dallas Stars are on a list of teams that he (allegedly) would be interested in joining for the upcoming season. Today, Dane dissects the pros and cons of adding a player of DeBrincat’s caliber. Would it even be possible with the Stars cap situation? Which line would he play on? The NHL offseason is in it’s early days, but that won’t stop us from speculating about the season the Dallas Stars will have in 2023-2024. Today Dane takes a look at the favorites (odds via FanDuel) to win the Stanley Cup next year. The Stars come in with the 10th best odds. Is this a good projection? With the offseason also comes trade speculations and the Winnipeg Jets could be looking to move several of their key players before their contracts expire. Should the Stars pursue any players from the Jets? To close, Dane asks and answers the question “should the Stars seek ti acquire a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft?”
