Locked On Sun Devils Hit - Quick Takes on Arizona State Sun Devils Football & Basketball

Hawaii is 1-22 under Timmy Chang when it scores 20 points or fewer, and that is the only bar Arizona State’s defense has to clear Saturday after giving up 55 to Baylor. Hawaii outgained San Jose State by 111 yards and still lost 20-16, so takeaways and the red zone matter more than yards. Then ASU hockey, where the interim head coach ASU names before Friday’s opener should come from outside Greg Powers’ staff.

Kenny Dillingham gave Arizona State’s play-calling back to Marcus Arroyo at Tuesday’s practice and spent that practice with the defense that gave up 564 yards to Baylor. I think the switch is a defense move first, because he said he had been leaning on one side of the ball. Arroyo says nothing changes, and I disagree: his fourth-and-1 deep shot in the 2024 Big 12 title game is what Cutter Boley needs from him.

Baylor scored 55 on Arizona State, and Kenny Dillingham counted ten to eleven busts with receivers wide open. I think a bust on a look you haven’t seen is a coaching problem, and he said it’s his fault. Then Hawai’i: it runs for 86 yards a game, so a win Saturday grades the pass defense, not the run defense Baylor hit for 244.

Kenny Dillingham said Monday that he chose a job he can’t get fired from, because he wants to live here for the rest of his life. I think that line puts the pressure on him, and the small fixes he promised start against Hawai’i. He also told Arizona State to dwell on its 55-19 loss to Baylor, and the 2025 rebound from Utah to Texas Tech is my case that he’s right.

Arizona State lost by 36 to Baylor, and two things still worked. Cardae Mack had 72 yards on seven touches, 10.3 a touch, and I think he needs the ball more, starting inside the 20. ASU also had one penalty for 15 yards, its fewest of the season, after nine at Texas A&M.

Arizona State lost 55-19 to Baylor, and Cutter Boley ranks seventh on my list of reasons. Baylor led 21-3 before Boley turned the ball over once, and his one interception came at 31-13. Then the Big 12 race: five teams have no conference loss, and Arizona State’s title path runs through Texas Tech in Lubbock and BYU in Provo.

Arizona State Sun Devils are reeling from second-half collapses, getting outgained by 265 yards after halftime against Power Four competition like Texas A&M, Kansas, and Baylor. Despite historically strong adjustments, the Sun Devils now face mounting questions: Are the coaches missing crucial fixes, or is something fundamentally broken in the locker room? Kenny Dillingham’s play-calling and Marcus Arroyo’s future are front and center as the team searches for answers.

Red zone inefficiency continues to haunt Arizona State, with Carson Smith’s field goals masking deeper offensive woes. Key players like Cutter Boley and Omarion Miller have missed critical opportunities, and despite improvements in the running game, a short-yardage identity remains elusive. With tough matchups against Texas A&M and Texas Tech looming, can Arizona State solve these glaring weaknesses and reverse their troubling trends?

Arizona State needs three things to beat Baylor without the 100-yard return and three takeaways it needed against Kansas: a clean pocket for Cutter Boley, shots for Reed Harris and a draw in the punt game. I think those three replace London's breaks. Then the Maroon Monsoon is back for the first home game since September 5, and I think the rerun of last year's Texas State look is the right call.

Arizona State brings eight 2027 commits and Baylor's own backyard to Saturday's game, from Waco Midway tight end Sloan Blackwell to a 2028 tight end whose brother plays for Baylor. I think a home win closes the Texas2Tempe pitch on the field. Then ASU hockey coach Greg Powers on paid leave, two days after seven players wrote to Michael Crow, and the independent investigation their letter also asked for.

Baylor has held all four opponents under 20 points this season, and Kenny Dillingham's Arizona State is 1-9 when it scores under 20, per ASU's game notes. I think ASU's 8-for-8 red zone gets it to 20 first. Then Reed Harris joined Baylor's Corey Coleman on a Big 12 list of three, and I think his 189 yards at Texas A&M prove the start is real.
