  • "Not the Terminator" - Ted Connell of Blue Skies AI Explores Benefits, Challenges and Real World Applications of Artificial Intelligence

Listen in as Ted Connell of Blue Skies AI Explores Real World Applications of Artificial Intelligence including a general discussion on the evolution and opportunities for industrial / commercial AI as well as a detailed discussion of healthcare inspection applications.

    A snippet of the conversation:

    Jim Frazer

What are the challenges of AI? And perhaps even before you answer that, Ted , for those of us who might not be steeped in the technology, what really is AI?

     Ted Connell

That's the greatest question. Because most people out there think of AI, they think of the Terminator, and Arnold Schwarzenegger going around blowing everything up. And what they were describing there is consciousness, what AI is, is math. It's not scary. It's just math. And it's like a loop. It's like plastic. And it's like electricity, AI is going to go everywhere, because it makes everything better. So, think about your brakes in your car, your ABS brakes, remember, we got ABS brakes, I can now put a couple dollars’ worth of electronics in there and make your brakes a lot better, because they're measuring how hard they're pushing in there. They're deciding when they want to push depending on what you're trying to do and how hard you're pushing your brake pedal. But we can make your brakes better. There's no consciousness in there. It's just a mathematical equation that's watching a pressure here and a pressure there and a temperature and it's doing a mathematical calculation to say what's the optimal. So that's all AI is just math trying to optimize equations.

  • Learn About JBG Smith and the Nation’s First 5G Smart City at Scale in National Landing

Listen to an insightful discussion about JBG Smith's Digital Infrastructure Platform being deployed at National Landing , VA directly from JBGS' Vardahn Chaudhry, Vice President Smart Cities & Digital Infrastructure and Adam Rashid, Senior Vice President .

U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) said “I am thrilled to see this collaboration of leading private sector organizations to promote 5G deployment. American competitiveness in the deployment of 5G networks – and innovation in the emerging technologies 5G unlocks – remain key to our national and economic security interest.  As a proud Virginian, I am excited to see National Landing emerge as our first 5G community – and I look forward to wider deployment across the Commonwealth. This collaboration can be a blueprint for how digital infrastructure is deployed, and I am heartened by the prospects of the innovation this may unlock to advance our country’s competitiveness globally.”

National Landing is a submarket nearly the size of Williamsburg Brooklyn, and an existing office density greater than downtown Austin, TX.  The submarket is in Arlington, VA and is home to Amazon’s HQ2 and Virginia Tech’s $1 billion STEM innovation campus. At full build-out National Landing will consist of over 30 million SF of mixed-use real estate, including office, residential, retail, public parks, and multi-modal transportation options. JBGS owns or controls nearly 70% of the existing and developable real estate in this submarket.

JBGS is deploying a robust digital infrastructure platform across National Landing that is purpose-built to stimulate innovation.

National Landing digital infrastructure platform will be the first of its kind in the nation and will be a blueprint for innovation districts across the globe going forward. The component parts of the platform include:

    • Fiber – Redundant/ubiquitous fiber with pre-wired fiber connections to nearly all buildings, public areas, and street furniture.
    • Edge Data Centers – Two urban edge data centers, acting as easy on-ramps to the cloud, locations for edge computing, and hubs for carriers & data aggregation.
    • Ubiquitous outdoor & Indoor 5G (MmWave and Mid-band) – True 5G at the mid and high band, allowing for Massive IoT Connection, Multi-gigabit speeds, and ultra-reliable low latency across the submarket.
    • Private Licensed Spectrum – JBGS controls 70MHz of private CBRS mid-band spectrum and will offer it to innovative users to enable private 5G networks for testing and scaling products on private secure cellular wireless networks.

Taken together, the JBGS digital infrastructure platform enables and unlocks the potential of the 4th Industrial Revolution and industries including Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Cloud/Edge computing.

While other innovation districts have focused on building clusters for traditional “placed-based” innovation, in National Landing we are combining traditional place-based innovation with the digital infrastructure required for the industries that are at the forefront of our nation’s economic growth, competitiveness, and national security.

With JBGS' digital infrastructure platform as the foundation for innovation for industry 4.0, JBGS is inviting, creating, and curating partnerships with key technology ecosystem participants to accelerate innovation in this city of the future.

  • EvariLUX– The Convergence of Illumination Photometrics with Geographic Information Systems

EvariLUX– The Convergence of Regional Illumination Photometers with Geographic Information Systems, A Discussion with Fritz Feiten, Streetlighting Consultant at Ameresco

Join Fritz Feiten and Jim Frazer, former Illuminating Engineering Society Roadway Lighting Committee Chair as they discuss EvariLUX, an innovative 3D approach to planning, visualizing and implementing outdoor lighting applications. EvariLUX overlays IESlight output files, which are unique to each fixture type, onto a three dimensional map. This confluence of datapoints allows a very intuitive visual containing insights such as the actual predicted light level on the pedestrian crosswalk or on your own front door keyhole. The varying heights of poles, spacing of poles, and varying elevations and grades of roads and sidewalks creates a true 3D representation, where under lit and overlit conditions can be quickly observed and corrected.

    What exactly is EvariLUX?

EvariLUX™ is a suite of tools to understand and analyze regional illumination photometrics within a Geographic Information System (GIS). EvariLUX is similar to bringing illumination data into Google Earth. EvariLUX strives to overcome the challenge of comprehensively understanding lighting design across an entire project area.

EvariLUX uses IES files and onsite elevation data to creates 2 primary outputs: and illumination surface and illumination volumes. An illumination surface is displayed using points and contours across the project area. Illumination volumes represent the 3D space illuminated above 1 lux.

For one EvarlLUX application,  Evari GIS Consulting completed a field audit of more than 60,000 streetlights across the City and empowered City staff to choose between 11 luminaires to install at each location. (Evari GIS Consulting did not make any decisions about which luminaires to use or where they should be installed.)

    Illumination Points and Contours

Illumination  points and contours provide a complete picture of the seamless underlying values within the illumination surface. The values on the ground are created using real world-elevation.

In order to pass as much information as possible, the points and contours are represented by their value, rounded and optimized for performance at different scales.

Represented numerically and pictorially are illumination contours - lines of equal illumination levels. Illumination contours and points represent the same underlying illumination surface values in different ways. Like the illumination points dataset, this illumination contour dataset covers all areas above .02 lux. A typical dataset can have over 250,000 individual lines ranging from 0 to 100+ lux.

Illumination Volumes are also represented as the 3D space where light is above 1 lux. The illumination volume uses the IES file to determine the lighting conditions after the fixture is installed.

     Illumination Volumes across a project

Many illumination volumes are typical in even a small neighborhood. Each volume is created individually using the prescribed IES file and the on-site elevation.

A typical dataset can leverage a variety of different IES files identified earlier across the entire street light count. EvariLUX can use 12, 30 or a hundred different IES files.

For more information on the EvariLUX solution and related services from Evari GIS, please visit them at http://evarilux.com/
