On Monday, March 9, 2015, Dr. Aryeh Siegel gave the following presentation to the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy in Israel, held in Haifa. LogoTalk Radio thanks Dr. Siegel for giving his kind permission to share the address with you.

During graduate studies in the philosophy of logic and metaphysics at M.I.T., Dr. Siegel became disillusioned with the analytic philosopher's bias toward reductionism and materialism. With the guidance of Professor Huston Smith, he began to develop a philosophy of the esoteric unity of religions that he further refined while teaching the philosophy of religion and mysticism at The William Paterson College of New Jersey and also studying psychotherapy. Having settled in Israel for over 30 years, Dr. Siegel has taught philosophy there in assorted venues, but has lately focused more on practicing and sharing the teaching of the Kabbalist Rabbi Yehuda Ashlag, which emphasizes selfless love as the way to achieve attachment to the divine. Living in the Jerusalem area as the father of five, he is currently employed as a manager of computer projects in the Israeli institute for social security, as well as working independently as a logotherapy counselor.

On May 30 and 31, 2015, the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis in cooperation with the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna, the professional guild of psychologists, and the Austrian Cultural Forum presented an International Conference on Man's Search for Meaning.

One of the key speakers at the conference was Prof. Dr. David Guttmann. David Guttmann, DSW, is the former Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Haifa, Israel. He is the author of several books on aging and co-editor of several other books on social work. His book entitled Logotherapy for the Helping Professional: Meaningful Social Work was published by Springer in 1996. More recently, he has published an autobiographical book entitled Homecoming, describing his youth in Hungary and the long and painful journey to his new homeland.

David Guttmann is one of the pioneers of logotherapy. He has translated three logotherapy books into Hebrew (along with Dr. Mignon Eisenberg), and has taught logotherapy in many parts of the world in formal courses, seminars, and workshops. He has been engaged in practice, teaching, research, and training in social work, gerontology, and logotherapy for the past three decades.

Dr. Guttmann participated in a question and answer session at the conference in Moscow. LogoTalk Radio wishes to thank Dr. Guttmann and the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis for making it available to our listeners.

On Monday, March 9, 2015, Dr. Alexander Batthyány gave the following keynote address to the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl's Logotherapy in Israel, held in Haifa. With his usual grace, Dr. Batthyány has given his kind permission for us to share the address with you.

Alexander Batthyány is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute Vienna and Director of the Viktor Frankl Archives. He is Professor and Academic Director of the Viktor Frankl Chair for Philosophy and Psychology at the University of the International Academy of Philosophy in the Principality of Liechtenstein. This chair was established by Dr. Viktor Frankl himself and represents the world's first and only Ph.D. program in logotherapy and logotherapy-related interdisciplinary studies at a fully accredited institution of higher learning. Dr. Batthyány is also Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Vienna, Vienna Medical School.

He is widely published in the areas of the philosophy of science, logotherapy, and consciousness studies with over 50 citations to his credit. These include five monographs, six edited anthologies, and ten edited volumes the most recent being Meaning in Existential and Positive Psychology, edited with Pninit Russo-Netzer. Forthcoming works include Conscious Selves: An Argument for Brain‐Mind‐Interactionism; To Cope, To Strive, To Understand: Existential Questions in Psychology. He is Head of the Editorial Board and First Editor of the 14‐Volumes of The Collected Works of Viktor Frankl, of which the first five volumes have been published. The complete set is expected to be finished around the year 2020.

We are happy and honored that Dr. Teria Shantall has given her kind permission for us to share her address entitled Logotherapy: Its Message, Its Power, Its Glory. This was the opening keynote given at the First International Congress of Viktor Frankl’s Logotherapy in Israel on the morning of March 9, 2015.

Teria Shantall, PhD, trained as a clinical psychologist in South Africa, at the Tavistock Clinic in London, and studied Logotherapy with Dr Viktor Frankl at the United States International University in San Diego. Her doctorate research with Holocaust survivors was published by the Magnes Press of the Hebrew University and was entitled Life‘s Meaning in the Face of Suffering. She presently heads the training courses in Logotherapy at the University of South Africa and is head of the English training courses in Logotherapy in Israel. She was nominated for a Jewish Achiever Award in South Africa in 2003 and won different awards at the 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013 World Congresses in Logotherapy for distinguished service in promoting the work of Viktor Frankl by the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy based in the United States. She sits on the International Board of Directors of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy based in the United States, is President of the Viktor Frankl Institute for Logotherapy in South Africa and Vice-President of the Viktor Frankl Association for Logotherapy in Israel.

Dr. Dmitry A. Leontiev has given his kind permission for us to present his lecture entitled The Multifaceted Meaning of Freedom. This presentation was given at the Second Future of Logotherapy Conference in Vienna on May 16, 2014.

Dmitry A. Leontiev, Ph.D., Dr.Sc., is Professor of Psychology at Moscow State University and President of the Institute of Existential Psychology and Life Enhancement based in Moscow. He is Vice-President of the Moscow branch of the Russian Psychological Society. He serves on numerous boards including the International Society for Existential Psychology and Psychotherapy and the European Network for Positive Psychology. He is associate editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology.

Dr. Leontiev has presented over 40 papers at international conferences and over 90 papers at national conferences, many of them dealing with existential psychology and positive psychology. He is the 2004 recipient of the Viktor Frankl Foundation award given by the City of Vienna.

Dr. Leontiev is a contributor to Meaning in Positive and Existential Psychology edited by Alexander Batthyány and Pninit Russo-Netzer.

Dr. Costello, founder and director of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Ireland, is a philosopher, logotherapist/existential analyst, and author of multiple books on psychoanalysis, logotherapy, and philosophy. He has been lecturing philosophy and psychology for over twenty years in University College Dublin, Trinity College, and, more recently, in the Dublin Business School. He was educated in St. Gerard's School, Castleknock College, and University College Dublin, where he read Philosophy and Spanish Language and Literature. His Master's degree in philosophy was in existentialism and his PhD degree was on psychoanalysis and hermeneutics.  Subsequently, he trained at the Irish Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, gaining a Diploma in Psychoanalytic Studies with a thesis on Lacan and criminology. Dr. Costello is a Diplomate in Logotherapy and sits on the international faculty of the Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy.  He is a member of the Editorial Board of the forthcoming Annual Review of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis and has published widely in The International Forum for Logotherapy. Dr. Costello is also an engaging and entertaining speaker who has allowed LogoTalk Radio to podcast several of his delightful presentations. Michael Thir is a clinical psychologist who was a student of Alexander Batthyány and is a principle organizer of The Future of Logotherapy conferences in Vienna. He is working closely with Dr. Batthyány on the upcoming Annual Review of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis. Recently, he has completed a research report for the Austrian Ministry of Health reconfirming the clinical efficacy of logotherapy and existential analysis.

Steven M. Southwick received an MD in Psychiatry from George Washington Medical School in 1980. He completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University Medical School and Yale Child Study Center. In addition, he serves as Deputy Director of the Clinical Neurosciences Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for PTSD, and is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His interests include the phenomenology and neurobiology of posttraumatic stress disorder and resilience, memory for traumatic events, and the longitudinal course of trauma-related psychopathology.
