Sermon Notes:
John 15:1-5
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing."
1 Corinthians 2:10-16
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
The letter from the older pastor, to the younger pastor:
Let me say that the Lord is gracious in that He deigns to bless any of us sinners in His work here on earth; and I rejoice in that, as I know you also do. The point here is a brotherly admonishment, to be careful about getting lazy and sloppy in God’s work as you get older and as the ministry becomes so comfortable that you can do it in your sleep, without the acute dependence on the Spirit that you once knew you had to beg for, and that you had to have. John 15:1-5. Have somebody WHO knows you well keeping watch on you. And if and when you no longer have the will and the passion to fulfill John 15:1-5 anymore, be fair to yourself and to your people and to your calling, and resign. You are a good man in the Lord. Stay right, my brother, and fulfill your calling.
