Planning to visit Derry/ Londonderry?

This city in Northern Ireland is well known for its defensive city walls, murals, and the tragic Bloody Sunday history during the period known as The Troubles.

Located at the westernmost end of the Causeway Coastal Route and the northernmost tip of the Wild Atlantic Way, Derry makes a terrific base to for touring portions of these scenic drives.

The city's original Irish name is Doire, which translates to ‘the oak grove'. That was anglicized to Derry.

In 1613 King James I changed the name to Londonderry for the London Guild who financed the building of the city walls.

Locally the city is generally referred to as Derry.

The Derry Walls are the largest ancient monument in state care in Northern Ireland and have the longest, complete circuit of ramparts of any of the remaining 30 walled towns in Ireland. 

The walls were built during the Plantation of Ulster, a colonization of the province of Ulster by the British to populate the area with British and Scottish Protestants. The walls were the main defensive structure for the plantation of the area.

Derry is a city known for its murals located in an area known as Bogside.

The murals began in the late 70s as a rather fluid political message, often a form of protest in the Catholic Nationalist community.

The murals that people see today were painted from the mid-90s and early 2000s, but were designed to be ‘static' and explain the modern history of Derry.

However, a unique and deeply moving famine experience exists in Northern Ireland at Gorta, located above Friel’s Pub in Swatragh, Mid Ulster. Gorta is not just another famine museum—it’s the only dedicated famine soup kitchen experience on the island of Ireland. The experience takes you through the history of famine relief efforts, particularly focusing on a soup kitchen established on-site by Dr. Mooney, a key figure in the community during the 1840s.

During the early 1990s, a famine pot was discovered on the property, leading to research that uncovered the site’s history as a charitable soup kitchen. Unlike government-run relief programs, this initiative was supported by local donations and managed under the direction of the Mercers Company, a London-based organization that once controlled vast lands in Ireland.

As you walk through Gorta, you journey from the pre-famine era, through its devastating effects, and finally, the relief efforts made by local communities. Storyboards, audio recordings, and visual exhibits guide you through the narrative, making it an accessible and digestible experience. The compact size of the exhibit means you can complete your visit in about 30 minutes, making it an ideal stop during your travels.

One of the most remarkable discoveries on-site was a low-lying window, believed to have been the serving point for the soup kitchen during the famine. This window, uncovered during lockdown, remains intact and serves as a physical link to the past.

Gorta is open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM, from April through September. Visitors can purchase admission at Friel’s Pub and explore the self-guided exhibit, with occasional insights from Dermot Friel and Cathy O’Neill, who also leads an Emigrant’s Walk up the nearby Carntogher Mountain.

For those looking for a deeper connection to Irish history, combining the Gorta experience with Cathy’s guided hike offers a profound look into the struggles of famine-era Ireland and the stories of those who emigrated.

While visiting Gorta, you also have the chance to experience Friel’s Pub, a fourth-generation family-run establishment that has been a staple in the community since 1903. Dermot Friel, who took over the business at just 18, continues to uphold its legacy alongside his wife, Katrina, and their children. The pub is not only a gathering place for locals but now also a stop for history enthusiasts and travelers seeking authentic Irish experiences.

To keep up with evolving tourism, the Friels have expanded the property to include a motorhome park and will soon introduce glamping-style shepherd’s huts, providing visitors with unique accommodation options.

Today I am joined by David Douglas, owner of Derrie Danders Walking & Audio Tours in County Derry, Northern Ireland.

County Derry is at the far west of Northern Ireland. It's a county with a stunning coastline and beautiful walled city. But Derry has quite a bit more to attract the visitor.

Derry is in between two fantastic regions – the Causeway Coast and the (beginning or end) of the Wild Atlantic Way. By basing yourself in Derry you find yourself at the ‘gateway' to all the incredible experiences in each area.

One of the best attractions in Derry is Downhill Demense (a National Trust property). Mussenden Temple is well known, but the estate it sits on is well worth a few hours' exploration.

While Derry/ Londonderry does have a turbulent and sometimes violent history the city is well in a peace process and the people are warm and welcoming to guests. Says David, “Sometimes we fight with each other, but we never fight with our guests.”

Derrie Danders offers tours that take in the city's stunning walls, as well as the murals of the Bogside. But David invites visitors to linger longer and dig deeper into Derry by offering tours about music and sieges, as well as full day touring options.

A lot of people know about Amelia Earhart’s famous solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932, but might not know that she actually landed in Ireland!

Amelia Earhart stands as one of the most celebrated pioneers in the field of aviation. Born in 1897, she pursued a passion for flying that led her to break barriers and challenge societal norms of her time. Earhart's adventurous spirit and unwavering determination cemented her status as a symbol of courage and resilience.

In 1932, Earhart made history as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a feat that brought her international recognition. Departing from Newfoundland, Canada, she faced mechanical issues and inclement weather before landing in a pasture near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The media was left waiting for her in Paris, her original planned destination.

Her unexpected arrival in Ireland made headlines, and the local farmers who greeted her were astonished to find that she had crossed the Atlantic alone. When she landed, she reportedly asked a farmer, “Where am I?” and received the amusing reply, “You’re in Gallagher’s field.” Concerned about safety, she also told him to put out his cigarette due to aviation fuel on her clothing. Earhart spent the night with the hospitable Gallagher family before heading to the northern counties of Ireland the next morning for her press conference. Without phones or cars, news of her landing spread slowly, making her stay in Ireland a unique and local memory. When she first arrived in Ireland, people thought she was a man as they were not used to seeing a woman in trousers.

Tragically, Earhart's life remains shrouded in mystery due to her disappearance in 1937 while attempting to circumnavigate the globe. Alongside her navigator, Fred Noonan, she vanished over the Pacific Ocean, leaving behind one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries of the 20th century. Numerous theories about her fate persist, ranging from a crash into the ocean to survival on a remote island, sparking fascination and debate for decades.

Despite her disappearance, Earhart's legacy endures as a source of inspiration for adventurers and dreamers alike. Her groundbreaking achievements and advocacy for gender equality continue to resonate, reminding us of the boundless possibilities that arise from determination and perseverance. Earhart's life and work remain a testament to breaking barriers and reaching for the skies.

Earhart's ambition extended beyond her personal achievements. She advocated fiercely for women in aviation, working to open doors for future generations. She played a key role in forming the Ninety-Nines, an organization dedicated to supporting women pilots, and tirelessly promoted opportunities for women in male-dominated fields. She was a social worker, author, mechanic, and even taught at Purdue University.

The Amelia Earhart Legacy Association of Derry was formed in 2012, there are currently six members that volunteer. Many people came to the first official meeting with stories of Amelia, and that’s when they realized there was great interest and a need for a society.

Today, the Amelia Earhart Legacy Association in Derry works tirelessly to honor her achievements and to educate others about her pioneering spirit. The association receives no formal funding. Through events, exhibitions, and community outreach, the association not only celebrates Earhart’s courage but also highlights the significance of her visit to Derry as a symbol of transatlantic progress and human ambition. Their efforts ensure that Earhart's remarkable story continues to inspire future generations globally while fostering a special connection to the region where her groundbreaking journey ended.

The mission of the association is “To encourage girls to pursue careers in aviation, aeronautics, and aerospace through flight and aviation programs.”

Visitors interested in Amelia Earhart’s story often explore landmarks in Derry linked to her historic landing. Many include stops at the city walls, the Guildhall, and the Northern Counties Hotel, where Earhart held her press conference. A large concrete cross marks the spot where she landed, though it was hidden for years and rediscovered by local enthusiasts. The site, along with the nearby Amelia Earhart Cottage, is open to visitors wanting to connect with this remarkable chapter of history.

The Amelia Earhart Legacy Association of Derry is collaborating with local groups to create a heritage trail celebrating her achievements, ensuring her story remains a vibrant part of the area’s cultural fabric.

Northern Ireland offers travelers a chance to explore a city with a rich history. Derry, with its significant past, is a key destination. From its city walls to its welcoming atmosphere, Derry offers a unique experience for visitors.

The Derry city wall is the only city wall in Ireland that still completely encloses a city. Built in the 17th century during the Plantation of Ulster, the wall serves as a reminder of the city’s history. A guided tour with local expert Gleann Doherty starts in A.D. 546 with Saint Columkille, who brought Christianity to Ireland, Britain, and Europe.

The tour continues as you explore the walls, which played a role in the Siege of Derry in 1689. As you walk, you'll hear about events that shaped the city, from the Plantation of Ulster to the civil rights struggles of the 20th century, including the Petition of Ireland in the 1920’s, the establishment of Northern and Southern Ireland, and the 70 years of civil rights strife that followed. The wall is not just a structure but a symbol of Derry's past and its connections to global events.

While Northern Ireland has often been associated with past conflicts, Derry has become a city of culture. It was named the UK City of Culture in 2013 and hosts the Fleadh Cheoil every year, a large celebration of Irish music.

Derry is also known for its community feel. The city's small-town atmosphere, combined with its cultural events, makes it a place where people feel connected to one another. The locals are friendly and welcoming, adding to the appeal of this city along the Causeway Coast.

You may notice that the city is called both “Derry” and “Londonderry.” Depending on your loyalties, you may use one name or another. This stems from the 17th century when English businessmen were strong-armed during the reign of James I into financing the build of the city wall. As a result, the city was renamed Londonderry. The name remains a point of local pride and identity, with some preferring “Derry” for its Irish heritage.

While Derry is rich in history and culture, the surrounding area offers stunning natural landscapes. A short drive from the city, you can visit the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site with unique rock formations. West Donegal is also nearby, offering beautiful coastal views.

The Inishowen Peninsula, in County Donegal, is another place worth visiting for its natural beauty. The Slieve League Cliffs, some of the highest in Europe, offer impressive views. Other spots like Rosses Point in Sligo and the Burren in County Clare are also worth exploring.

Today, Derry and Northern Ireland are peaceful and safe for tourists. Although the region has a complicated history, it has moved forward and is now welcoming to visitors.

It wasn’t long ago that you couldn’t drive your rental car into Northern Ireland. Although the process of peace achieved a level of success – and continues to be a process – the memories of the strife are still in people’s minds. You can now drive into Northern Ireland and explore the area without concern, enjoying both Derry and its surroundings.

A definite stop along the Causeway, Derry has a small town feel where people are friendly, where you are acknowledged with a smile and a ‘Yes!”, and everyone seems to be connected in some way going back to the tradition of the clans and the strong family connections between them. Derry offers a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.
