SHOW NOTES: Everyone tells new writers to plan, polish, learn the craft, and find the "right" tools. But sometimes all that preparation becomes the very thing that keeps us from writing. In this episode, we're kicking the "but" out of the room — at least long enough to let the story exist. We'll talk about the Creator versus the Critic, pantsers versus plotters, yellow pads versus Word versus Scrivener, and why the tool matters far less than getting the story out of your head and onto the page. Because the messy draft isn't the inferior version of the real work. The messy draft IS the work. First, make a mess. Then make a map. Then refine it. And if you've been waiting for the perfect setup before you begin, I've got a simple 15-minute challenge to help you stop preparing to write your book — and start writing it.
Talking Points: • Writing messy and dreaming big • The Creator vs. the Critic • Why finishing a novel is so difficult • Inspiration first, editing later • Pantsers vs. plotters • Turning a messy draft into a story map • Choosing the right writing tools • Word, notebooks, and Scrivener • Don't let software stop you from writing • The 15-minute writing challenge • Giving yourself permission to just start • Getting your book out of your head and onto the page
Show Notes: This episode explores the South Texas athletes, teams, and family legacies that helped shape local sports history throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. The conversation highlights track-and-field breakthroughs, Miller High School standouts, the athletic traditions of families in Calallen, and the careers of athletes who went on to compete at the collegiate and national levels. From record-setting performances and changing techniques to the importance of family, community, and school programs, this episode preserves the stories behind generations of South Texas athletes.
Key topics include: • Roger Bannister's four-minute mile and its impact on track and field. • Homero Rodriguez and Roberto Gonzalez of Falfurrias and their 1966 state meet performance. • Their Texas A&I careers and All-American honors. • Competing on cinder and dirt tracks in the 1960s. • The athletic legacies of the Jones and Vaughn families in Calallen. • South Texas track standouts and their accomplishments. • The evolution of high-jump technique and the Fosbury flop. • Randy Matson's shot-put career and place in athletic history. • Arturo Delgado's career at Miller High School and Baylor. • Inez Perez's path from Miller to Henderson Junior College and SMU. • The role of family, schools, and community in preserving South Texas sports history.
