In Season 12, Episode 2 of Beach Weekly, Lei Madrigal covers flooding on campus, new student housing and more.

Cupid at the Beach is on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at which students can craft Valentine’s Day cards and spend time with their partner. The event will take place inside the University Student Union Beach Ballroom on the second floor from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All craft supplies and treats are free for students while supplies last.

The Career Development Center is hosting an online Alumni Job Search meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6 via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. Participants must register online.

A Black History Month Cookout will be held at the USU Southwest Terrace on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at noon. The 25th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. in the USU Ballrooms with more events to come.

Last Thursday, Feb. 1, flooding caused by heavy rainfall forced closures to several roads on campus and employee parking lots E3 and E4. The storm also damaged multiple EV chargers on campus and flooded the Walter Pyramid, forcing the women’s basketball game to be relocated to the Gold Mine. Major storms are expected to continue into this week.

The University Police Department has planted decoy bikes around campus in an attempt to catch bike thieves. Each decoy bike has a location tracking feature that allows the police department to determine where stolen bikes are going. Bike theft is one of the most frequent crimes on campus and the decoy bikes are a renewed effort to reduce and prevent theft.

The 2024 Campus Safety Plan provided by the University Police Department listed many upcoming improvements to campus safety such as upgraded fire alarm systems in the Parkside and Beachside dorms, upgraded lighting along Parkside housing pathways and renovations to the Parkside Service Center.

This summer, construction will begin on a new student housing project called La Playa Hall to increase affordable student housing on campus. The new facility will add at least 424 beds and cost an estimated $115 million, according to the project’s website. La Playa Hall will include a built-in mental health facility run by the Counseling and Psychological Services program on campus. Beach Building Services said the extension of the CAPS program has also been implemented in other housing locations. With construction starting in Summer 2024, the current expected completion date is set for Summer 2026.

An ocean exploration company called Deep Sea Vision announced that it captured sonar images of what is thought to be the remnants of Amelia Earhart's lost plane at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. The 16-person crew made the discovery with an underwater drone near Hawaii, about 100 miles from Howland Island. Deep Sea Vision plans to investigate the area more thoroughly later this year.

As of Feb. 2, the Israeli military says that it has defeated Hamas in the major city of Khan Younis and will now focus its military operations in Rafah near Gaza’s southern border. Since the conflict began last year, over 2.2 million Gaza citizens have fled to areas throughout Southern Gaza like Khan Younis and Rafah to escape the Israeli invasion.

Black History Month begins this Thursday, Feb. 1, and the university's Division of Student Affairs has a full month of events planned. The first event is Black Graduate Student Game Night on Feb. 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Peterson Hall 1 (PH1) Room 230.

Student Health Services has a couple of workshops planned for this week, starting with Birth Control 101 today, Monday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Student Health Services building. This workshop is scheduled to occur this semester every Monday at 10 a.m. and every Wednesday at 2 p.m. SHS also offers a nutrition workshop on Mondays at 2 p.m., Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m.

Anthony Orrico, a news assistant with the Daily Forty-Niner, joined this episode of Beach Weekly to discuss the recent California Faculty Association faculty strike, which ended after a tentative agreement was reached on the first scheduled day of striking. He shared information about the history of CFA strikes, new negotiated working conditions and when the agreement may be finalized.

The Long Beach State dining hall management team conducted a study in October 2022 to observe the amount of food wasted by students in the campus dining halls. During the study, it was determined that about 15,000 pounds of food were wasted between the three dining facilities. When food waste was measured a year later in Oct. 2023, the overall waste had only gone down 30 pounds. As a result of the study, the Food Waste Reduction Campaign was formed with the goal of reducing waste by 20%. The Office of Sustainability has since worked with ASI and Sustain U to provide other sustainability workshops and events.

The International Court of Justice has found that it is "plausible" that Israel has violated the Genocide Convention with actions committed during the recent conflict in Gaza. The ICJ has ordered that Israel must abide by the Genocide Convention. Although the court has not called for a complete ceasefire, it has voted that Israel must take all measures in its power to stop anything related to genocide in Gaza, prevent and punish those inciting genocide, ensure humanitarian needs in Gaza and more.

  • Beach Weekly S11E15: Not Alone @ the Beach, Israel-Hamas ceasefire collapse & more

Host Lei Madrigal wraps up season 11 of Beach Weekly with topics like the Not Alone @ the Beach organization at Long Beach State, the collapse of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and more.

An organization on campus called “Not Alone @ the Beach” works to bring attention to power-based harassment on campus like stalking, abuse and violence. The group also puts a large emphasis on providing support to victims, teaching prevention methods and offering sexual education. Students should know that while coping with being a victim of sexual assault is difficult, no one is ever alone in the process.

On Friday, Nov. 17, Long Beach city officials said that a major cybersecurity breach caused the city’s main website and other online city-related resources to be inaccessible. Officials say there was no initial request for ransom, but they confirmed that city data was stolen. Currently, they don’t know what kind of data or how much was taken. The city’s main website is back up and running as of last Monday, but investigations into the extent of the breach could last months, according to the city.

New toll lanes on the 405 freeway from the Los Angeles County line to Costa Mesa opened last Friday, Dec. 1, according to Orange County Transit Authority. Vehicles using the toll lanes must have a FasTrack transponder. Toll rates are expected to range from $3 to $10 per trip. Vehicles with three or more passengers are allowed to use the toll lanes for free as well as motorcycles and vehicles that have veterans’ or disabled persons' license plates. Clean air vehicles qualify for a 15% discount on tolls.

Three college students of Palestinian descent were shot at close range while they were out on a walk in Burlington, Vt. The suspect, 48-year-old Jason J. Eaton was sent to jail on three counts of second-degree attempted murder and has pleaded not guilty. The victims were wearing traditional Palestinian attire and speaking in a mix of English and Arabic when they were approached, and the incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Montana was set to ban TikTok on Jan. 1, 2024, but the law was blocked by a district judge before going into effect. The judge said that the planned TikTok ban oversteps state power and violates the First Amendment. The current ruling is preliminary and a trial followed by an ultimate decision is expected for next year.

Nearly all Democrats and over 100 Republicans within the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to expel New York Republican George Santos from Congress. Santos has allegedly been indicted on 23 criminal charges including wire fraud, money laundering, false statements to Congress, conspiracy and more. He is the first-ever Republican to be expelled from Congress.

The temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war was extended past its original four-day long pause before attacks resumed on its seventh day. The ceasefire had allowed for 100 hostages to be released by Hamas and 250 Palestinians to be released by Israel. The Israeli military says that it was resuming fighting because Hamas violated the terms of the truce and attacked Israeli territories. Hamas claims that Israel bears full responsibility for the collapse of the ceasefire. The two sides continue to place blame on each other as fighting continues.
