  • Son of a Beach S2E12: Jonathan is in MAJOR trouble

Looks like there’s MAJOR trouble for Jonathan Majors. As stated on Deadline, the actor is facing domestic violence allegations in NYC after a March 25 incident involving a dispute with a 30-year-old woman. The unnamed victim was taken to a hospital with “minor injuries to her head and neck,” according to authorities at the time. Days following Majors’ arrest, a thread of texts were made public where the alleged victim blamed herself for the incident. It has yet to be authenticated by authorities. On April 17, Majors’ manager from Entertainment 360 and publicist The Lede Company fired him, according to Deadline.

In other major news, Buzzfeed announced on April 20 that it will be releasing and laying off 15% of its staff, amounting to about 180 people following the news of the removal of BuzzFeed’s news division. According to The New York Times, when BuzzFeed News was founded in 2011, in the run-up to the next year’s presidential election, it explored stories both slight and serious through listicles and click-bait-style headlines designed to go viral on social media. The Pulitzer Prize winning news operation soon drew attention for its ambitious, sharp reporting, however, and went on to open overseas bureaus and invest in investigative journalism.

Congratulations to model Sofia Richie and music executive Elliot Grainge who recently tied the knot over the weekend in the South of France. The 24-year-old model and designer, who is the daughter of legendary singer Lionel Richie, exchanged vows with Grainge, 29, the son of Universal Music Group chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge, during a ceremony in Antibes, France, according to People. Richie was stunned wearing three dresses on her big day. Sister Nicole Richie was in attendance and superstar dad Lionel Richie walked Sofia down the aisle. Richie and Grainge began dating in 2021 and became engaged one year later.

Zendaya returned to the live stage after eight years. The superstar joined Labrinth during his Coachella set on Saturday and surprised fans with a superb performance of Labrinth and Zendaya songs from popular HBO show Euphoria including “All for Us” from the show’s first season and “I’m Tired” from its second. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zendaya acknowledged the fact that it’s been years since the Euphoria star appeared on stage to sing live during a scheduled set in an Instagram Story discussing the “magical” night. “Thank you all for welcoming me back on that stage with open arms. It’s been a very long time, so I appreciate it,” she said in one story she recorded in the early hours after her performance before heading to bed.

  • Beach Weekly S10E13: Future U Project, Japan's first casino & more

In Season 10: Episode 13 of Beach Weekly, Lei Madrigal discusses Long Beach, national and international news.

A conversation with Hannah Shields, the news editor for the Daily Forty-Niner, gave insight on the rise of anti-Semitism and its effect on Long Beach State students. After a man who shot two men at an LA synagogue this February was proven to be the same man who lingered on campus with a gun last summer, university administration still has not released a statement to Jewish students. The center for Jewish life on campus at Long Beach State, Beach Hillel, strives for communal inclusion of Jewish students.

ASI is hoping to complete their proposal for the Future U Project, a plan to upgrade the student union to meet student needs, by the end of the semester. The new student union would have expanded food services, more seating and study spaces, wellness counseling, and more.

After turning himself into authorities, a former Long Beach State student is facing misdemeanor charges for taking hundreds of photos and videos of men in public restrooms and showers on campus. He has not been allowed back on campus since the incident and is set to appear in court on May 4.

An equipment malfunction caused a sewage spill to dump 250,000 gallons of waste into the L.A. river that flows into the ocean in Long Beach. Contaminated water prompted beach closures in Long Beach on the area’s hottest weekend of the year until water quality is tested and deemed safe.

Last Thursday, SpaceX launched their Starship for the first time, but the rocket exploded mid-flight before reaching space. The rocket was 394 feet tall, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. The explosion can be seen as a success since just getting off the ground at all was significant progress.

Japanese officials have approved a plan to open the country’s first casino in Osaka in 2029 as a way to encourage tourist spending and create jobs. The project has an investment of 1.8 trillion yen and is projected to bring in over 20 million visitors and 500 billion yen every year.

Trillions of gallons of water sit beneath the Mojave desert in the Fenner aquifer that stretches hundreds of square miles. It could be a way to relieve California of its water shortage, but the idea of tapping this aquifer is opposed by conservationists and the Chemehuevi tribe. The site of the aquifer is an important location for one of the tribe’s spiritual ceremonies.

  • Son of a Beach S2E11: To be quite Frank, Coachella is bringing out all types of Em-Oceans

It’s safe to say that singer Camila Cabello loves it when Shawn Mendes calls her senorita because the two were caught snuggling and kissing throughout the first weekend at the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. On Friday, the pair were spotted in a clip enjoying each other’s company while watching a performance. Cabello and Mendes smiled at each before going in for a steamy kiss, as people in the crowd looked on.

Singer Frank Ocean was headliner for day three of Coachella following Bad Bunny on Friday and Blackpink on Saturday. This was his return to the desert stage after six years and many fans anticipated the big performance. However, the set didn’t start on time. Matter of fact, Ocean didn’t hit the stage until nearly an hour after and the set was cut short to remain on time for the duration of the night. Ocean dropped to headline weekend two and band Blink-182 has replaced them to headline on Sunday.

According to CNN, Netflix’s highly anticipated live reunion Sunday for the season four cast of its reality dating show “Love is Blind” has been delayed after technical issues kept eager fans waiting. Eventually, Netflix opted to tape the show for streaming, announcing it would be available globally at 3 p.m. ET Monday.

Speaking of dating, it looks like Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet are confirmed to be dating after all. If you tuned in last week, then you should remember that I said that Chalamet and Jenner are potentially dating. ET has reported that a source confirmed Kylie and Timothée's rumored relationship, but things aren't quite that serious between them just yet. The pair has been seen on a taco date and Jenner’s car was spotted at Chalamet’s house earlier this month.

  • Beach Weekly S10E12: CSULB road repairs, NPR quits Twitter & more

In Season 10: Episode 12 of Beach Weekly, Lei Madrigal discusses the most recent local, national and international news.

As the CSULB campus roads see a lot of wear and tear due to the high transportation rate as a commuter school, a three-phase project called the Campus Road Repair Project is underway to enhance campus safety and efficiency. Cracks in roads will be fixed and loose asphalt will be replaced. Pedestrians will get wider sidewalks, drivers will get sturdier roads, and cyclists will get new, safer bike lanes. In total, the completed project is estimated to cost around $2.4 million once all repairs are finished.

An office tower in East Long Beach near the university campus is being turned into 149 off-campus student apartment suites. The new apartment complex will be geared towards Long Beach State students but not officially affiliated with the university. The developers plan to begin leasing apartments in the new building by the 2025-2026 school year.

Last month, the city of Long Beach turned a rarely-used downtown parking lot into a safe site for people living in their cars. The site provides vital resources including restrooms, pet areas and hand-washing stations. There are also Homeless Services Bureau staff on-site to connect homeless people to programs that could provide relief. The site will operate until May 21.

NPR will no longer post new content on Twitter accounts after Twitter’s decision to label the media organization as “government-funded” and “state-affiliated.” NPR is a private, non-profit organization whose institution and board are independent of the government. NPR will continue to be active on all other forms of social media.

The lithium-ion battery in an electric bike caused a fire that resulted in two deaths last Monday in New York City. The bike was charging outside of a multi-family building when it suddenly erupted in flames and quickly made its way to a second-floor apartment.

Last Thursday, Ghana approved a new vaccine for children five months through 36 months old to prevent the spread of malaria. An early-stage testing result from last year found that the vaccine is about 80% effective. The final testing stages of the vaccine are still underway and results are expected by the end of the year. It is not yet known when the vaccine will be widely available.

An enormous amount of water will continue to rush into California’s rivers and streams this spring and summer as a result of melting snowcaps. Two rivers, the Tule and Kern, may exceed 400% of their average runoff from April to July. Reservoirs and basins in Southern California are also expected to overflow.

Somewhere in a forest between Maine and Canada, a ton of meteorites hit Earth and they are waiting to be discovered. The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is offering $25,000 to the first person to find and turn in any meteorites weighing over two pounds.

  • Son of a Beach S2E10: Is Timothée Chalamet Kylie Jenner's new bae?

Rumors have surfaced that actor Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner are potentially dating. The news sparked in January when an entertainment news channel called Deux Moi posted a breathless “new couple alert!” According to Glamour, sources claim that the rumored couple spent New Year’s together in Aspen, possibly went on vacation to Turks and Caicos in January, and will be attending Coachella together later this month. Jenner, of course, split with her on and off boyfriend and the father of her two kids, Travis Scott, around the holidays last year.

It seems that Nick Cannon may not be done thinking about having children, at least on the recent Howard Stern show. The host of the Masked Singer joked about who he’d most want to become the mother of his next baby — who would become his 13th child total — coming to the conclusion that Taylor Swift would be a perfect fit, according to Billboard. During the interview Stern asked, “Who would be the woman that’d make you have a baby again?” Cannon replied, “I’m not doing this. I can [already] see the headlines … I’m all in. First of all, she’s an amazing songwriter. What I do love about Taylor Swift is the fact that she has been so vulnerable and open with all of her music since she was a young girl.”

"Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown and actor Jake Bongiovi, the son of rock legend Jon Bon Jovi, appeared to announce their engagement on Tuesday, according to NBC News. Brown, 19, posted photos to her Instagram in black and white showing off a giant ring with the caption, "I’ve loved you three summers now, honey, I want 'em all," the British actor wrote on Instagram, apparently referencing Taylor Swift's "Lover." Bongiovi, 20, posted something similar to his Instagram with the caption, “forever”.

The trailer for the upcoming MCU film “The Marvels” dropped its first teaser on Tuesday during Good Morning America. Fans got a first look at the Marvel film starring Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). As stated by Marvel, Carol Danvers also known as Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. The film will also star Samuel L. Jackson, Zawe (Zah-Wee) Ashton, and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta will be directing the anticipated film and Kevin Feige is the producer. “The Marvels” releases in theaters on November 10.

  • Beach Weekly S10E11: Students protest commencement procedures, new anti-trans laws & more

In Season 10: Episode 11 of Beach Weekly, Lei Madrigal discusses the latest happening on campus, locally, and nationwide.

In an interview with Hannah Shields, the news editor for the Daily Forty-Niner, we learned the details of a recent student protest about this year’s commencement ceremonies. The protest, led by fourth-year student Zeina Elrachid, was in opposition to the university’s decision to hold very minimal commencement ceremonies this year where graduates will neither walk across the stage nor have their names called.

Long Beach State students will pay $65 during the fall semester and $89 in the spring for the Instructionally Related Activities fee. During the Spring 2023 semester, students paid $25. The money put towards the activities fee will pull athletics out of their budget deficit of $4.5 million, help fund the school’s 19 sports teams, provide internship opportunities and more.

An increase in deaths on LA Metro public transportation this year has prompted Metro to try to decrease crime rates by playing loud, nonstop classical music at the Westlake/MacArthur stop. The music is meant to be too unbearable to hear all day and would deter people from lingering in stations. Metro hopes a decrease in crime will increase ridership.

Kansas lawmakers have voted to ban transgender women from women’s bathrooms, prisons and domestic violence shelters. Other states are also trying to limit transgender rights. Idaho and Indiana both signed a bill that criminalizes gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth, and 12 other states already have bans on it.

Paris residents have voted to ban e-scooters from the city because they are eyesores, traffic disruptions and safety hazards. About 15,000 e-scooters could be taken off the streets of Paris as soon as August when the city’s contracts with the scooter companies expire.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles which was originally built by real estate developers in 1923 to attract new residents. The sign was only supposed to be standing for 18 months, but a century later, it is an iconic part of Los Angeles culture.
