The author encourages us to take a deeper look at rocks on the beach. Illustrations are drawn. “Most are ordinary but some are strange and wonderful.” Fish, geese, numbers, etc. Makes me want to go explore what shapes and numbers we might find in the rocks.

Elizabeti's Doll by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen  There’s a new baby in the house and Elizabeti decides she wants a doll to take care of as her mother cares for the baby. She looks around the village, and finds a perfect rock to be her doll. She sings to the rock doll as her mom sings to the baby, changes diapers, and loves her special doll. Lots of imagination.

Rhoda's Rock Hunt by Molly Beth Griffin Rhoda’s aunt and uncle take her backpack camping in Minnesota near a stream. She really likes the rocks there because she loves rocks. She found so many special rocks and had to carry her own pack. Lots of great adjectives! She tires of the trip, yet finds a beach full of rocks which makes her happy. She can’t carry them all home, so must make some decisions about rocks and sharing with others.

Leaf Man, by Lois Ehlert, is a great fall book for imagination and creativity. As the wind blows, Leaf Man travels past ducks, geese, orchards, meadows, and cows. The entire book is made of fall leaves and cut paper. Many leaves are identified in the back. This whimsical book inspires imagination as children will surely look at the potential of fallen leaves in a different way.
