With Florida being home to the most veterans in the US, the local United Way has joined forces with the Veterans Council forming a new entity - Mission United. Offering the services that have been readily available it also will address community and veteran "family" in the future. Knowing each other's wants and needs is what servicemen and women can bring each other. Commeraderie heals.

Vero Beach is known for its loggerhead, leatherback and green turtles. That is, now after years of conservation and input from the community. Kendra Bergman, Executice Director of Coastal Connection, tells us the ins and outs of why our area is so magical and turtle friendly.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Dr. Nancy Baker shares her personal story as well as stories of her family's diagnoses with cancer. Her dad was diagnosed with breast cancer. Most people don't realize men can get breast cancer. That diagnosis generally will come from a dermatologist. Current treatments and screenings are more progressive than years ago. Breast cancer isn't the doomsday it once was.

Jamison Kelley and Scott Simpson join host Lori Davis talking about this private school started in our county four years ago. The curriculum is based on the classical education from years - centuries - ago. Latin is taught in the third grade! All classes delve deeper into each subject spending an entire semester and more on a single project. This gives students in-depth knowledge. Enrollment is open to every student. They're in the process of building a new school west of town with anticipation of opening sometime next school year. Sports, arts, music and other derivitives are included in student's education.

It's the second time for City Council. Tracey Zudans believes in holding accountability to the max, listening to resident's opinions and their needs and being available to the residents. Vero Beach is growing in leaps and bounds and several issues are forefront on people's minds:  Three Corners, the airport, Proposition 3, Paid parking among the many.

Twelve years ago four freshman high school students brainstroming in the Florida Keys, wanted to benefit our Indian River Lagoon-Estuary. They were enamored with the clear blue water of the Keys. Today Lines in the Lagoon keeps benfitting our local waterway. Sophmores Chloe Nye and Chandler Higdon join host Lori Davis. ORCA, Ocean Restoration and Conservation Association is the non-profit overseeing the health of the lagoon and is the benficiary of profits from Lines in the Lagoon. To date, nearly $20,000 is raised annually.

November's ballot in Florida is looking at Amendment 3 being a strong part of voter's mindset. The amendment deals with exemptions and property taxes. Many people think if the amendment goes through services and education bottom lines will be affected. This isn't necessarily accurate. IF the Homestead is adopted the mileage rates can be increased instead, and that will keep the actual property tax amounts no different. The same amount of tax money will be collected. There is a lot of money on the table, and the idea is for municipalities to be more accountable and efficient with the money they have to appropriate.

Our Vero Beach airport is flying high! Breeze, American and JetBlue Airlines supply non-stop service to some popular cities, including Boston and Raleigh, NC. In the coming weeks, the townfolk are invited to voice their opinion on some expansion ideas now being discussed. A new food vendor has been added to the airport and outside seating accommodations as well.
