THE LOST IMMORTALS – EXPANDING YOUR MUSICAL HORIZONS Ep 189 Sun 6.11.22 5-7pm

on Mid Sussex Radio 103.8FM

From the birth of rock'n'roll, the first spasms of jazz, the wriggle of soul and the petal-opening of pop, musicians have written about their dreams. Just because these tracks weren't hits doesn't mean those dreams were impossible. Some dreams are too good to become reality. So let's share them.

Lose your price tag
The Greek Stoic Philosopher Epictetus said ‘Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.’
America’s Black Friday has been adopted by retailers this side of the pond in order to create a new, pre-Christmas holy day of spending, consumerism and quasi-giving. Why is it called Black Friday? Because it helps the retail industry get out of the red. Its sacred shrines are Oxford and Bond Street. Instead of Lourdes, the pilgrimage ends at Fortnum and Mason and Harrods. From its origins as the day after Thanksgiving when workers would take an additional day off, it has become a huge festival of thanks for the retail sector, lasting until the Boxing Day sales.
Not surprisingly, many penniless musicians have written about the dangers of materialism.

Bye Bye. Fly Fly. The art of Leaving
Winners do quit. But rather than seeing leaving as a failure, they turn their energy to the next venture… and the next, and the next. Sometimes quitting is good. It’s really important,” says Eric Barker, author of ‘Barking Up the Wrong Tree’. “There are only 24 hours in a day. If you never quit anything, you’re going to have less time for the things that really matter.”
Research shows that, sometimes, walking away from a job, relationship or even a dream can make you happier, healthier and more successful.
You may be working towards the wrong goals to begin with. Even if an ambition was once a good fit, it might not be later. After all, if we never gave up on anything we’d all still be in our first jobs and wearing nappies.

There's a Last Time for Everything
In 2008 Mumm-Ra were hot. Their album 'These Things Move in Threes' was their sole and unique album. Perhaps they couldn't better perfection. A last hurrah single 'Summer' was released in 2020. Typically it was brilliant, catchy and ignored. This is the show it was made for.

Chances/Choices
We are all trekkers on the Tibetan path to enlightenment – or at least which supermarket to shop in. We carry our accumulated life choices in a heavy rucksack, hoping we don’t get stopped at customs. Some people point to accidents, coincidences, serendipity – others argue that there are only choices. Regardless of the individual decisions we make, we are much greater than the sum of our choices.
Life chances influence your life choices. Your ability to make choices relates directly to the freedoms that privilege or privation bestow upon you.
Both large and small choices can change our life. Why did you sit next to that girl on the bus, who is now your wife? Why were you in a bus and not a 1st class carriage?

Where is my mind?
The Pixies meet Retrowave with piano and orchestra; Dead Boys join Iceage, whilst the Groundhogs, Savoy Brown, Jack Bruce and Leslie West jam. And then there is Status Quo covering a Goffin King song from 1969 when Rossi was still an ice cream parlour on Southend seafront. The kaleidoscope turns.

Just Say Yes
In Dawn French’s novel ‘According to Yes’ Rosie Kitto, a thirty-eight-year-old primary school teacher runs away to New York looking for a fresh start. Working as a nanny and embracing her newly adopted philosophy of saying ‘yes’ to life, Rosie’s enthusiasm brings out the best and worst of those around her with emotional consequences. The 2008 movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey sees the main character stuck in a rut. He goes to a self-help seminar and learns to unleash the power of saying YES to absolutely everything.
