French Pressings
France has a great reputation for many things (revolutions, stifling bureaucracy, snails) but pop music is not on the list. Despite being the country that produced the genius of Daft Punk, the breathtaking soundscapes of Air, and eccentric sixties Whitney Houston fan Serge Gainsbourg, little French music is heard outside Francophone countries.
So where does this negativity come from? A lot of it comes from French people themselves, who are not overly keen on the musical output of their own country. And the fact that French radios are legally obliged to play 40% French music. Which is a bit like having to do your homework before you get to go on the playstation..
So this week we’re playing some of the best and in some cases very familiar French songs, many of which got translated into English and then went on to be huge..

Never Out of Dates
On the weekend that we celebrate Our Majesty’s the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee I thought it would be interesting to play some songs with dates in the title and explore why these dates are important. The thing about dates is we don’t know when they might come around again. Music ensures that some dates live forever.
So we played songs with dates in the title and explored the stories behind the lyrics covering events from WW1 to Tiannamen Square, the assassination of JFK to Prince anticipating 1999 and Bowie writing a song for a 1984 musical that never happened.

Not Skin Deep.
Creating a false reality in photoshopped images creates low self-worth. We’ve become immune to what media portrays, and have accepted the media-defined lie about what is considered beautiful. How many girls – and boys - aspire to unachievable images of what beauty should be like? How long does it take in front of a mirror to become beautiful? Who decides? Who benefits? What if real beauty flowed from the inside out? What if your skin was a signpost rather than a destination?

THE LOST IMMORTALS – EXPANDING YOUR MUSICAL HORIZONS
Ep 165 22.5.22 with Roy Stannard and Matthew Staples
A siren calls. A girl turns. She sees a glint of silver winking at her from a corner of the rock pool. Sea urchins and baby crabs scuttle in all directions as she reaches into the shallows to locate the half-hidden object. As she pulls the bakelite and chrome box out of the water, a rusty aerial slowly extends from its casing. The mottled dial lights up and static coalesces into sound. As the waves dribble back into yesterday and currents fade into tomorrow, the girl, older now, upturns a barnacled record chest. Underneath, dessicated tunas turn their gills in the direction of the ocean and take a deep breath..
Press down on the frail chests of the lost immortals and quietly speak their names. Siren songs. Should have beens.
To find your destination, first look at where you've been.
So how do you get from 'Cherry Red' to two former X Factor contestants via Seasick Steve on 4 string lead? This is where you find out..

I know what I like (in your wardrobe)
If fashion and pop aren’t brother and sister, then they’re first cousins.
Style and sound collaborations have resulted in some of the most dynamic fashion trends in popular culture. Some came into being as productions for the stage and music video; others become long-lasting fashion trends. Three types of collaboration exist. One is when fashion designers and showbiz celebrities come together on one-off projects – such as Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier’s Whirlpool corset dress for her 90’s Blond Ambition tour. Another occurs when youth subcultures express themselves through fashion like the New Romantics in the 80s. The third is when the fashion industry riffs on a cultural trend such as punk.. Style needs music and music needs style. Both are always in vogue.
