The Rotterdam Incident
Last weekend I tuned into Eurovision. That’s what lockdown does to you. The Italian winners were Red Hot Chilli Peppers fronted by a young Michael Hutchence. The runner up was a delicate Edith Piaf flower re-potted. However two acts stood out. The Norwegian entry Tix performed his own song about the experience of having Tourettes and The Belgian group Hooverphonic who had been a major band in the early 2000s and the only act in my iTunes collection. We’ll ask why these acts didn’t get anywhere. We’ll also look at the career of Adrian Gurvitz – a musician who made the transition from rock guitarist to romantic songwriter to Yacht rock and then to worldwide acclaim as a songwriter-producer. We’ll play some excellent electronica - and introduce you to two superb young UK female acts who are future Mercury Award winners along with a young UK male musician called Hider who is unsigned but has 50,000 plays a month on Spotify. Let’s throw open your doors of reception.

I want a word – songs with spoken word parts
There’s nothing like a good talking to on a record. If you want to create a memorable moment and preserve it for dramatic effect, then pause the music and subdue it and let the charismatic lead singer talk over the melody.
So contemplate these unusual pairings: Anthony Hopkins and Hans Zimmer doing Dylan Thomas; Savages Jehnny Beth with Cillian Murphy; Charlie Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator' in a dream pairing with Hans Zimmer; Kate Bush and her mum; Paloma Faith and Samuel L Jackson; Jean Michel Jarre and the whistleblower Edward Snowden; Harry Styles and model Camille Rowe; Paul Weller's statement to God with the help of Aziz Ibrahim; the band Texas with Alan Rickman and David Balfe in the guise of 'For those I love' delivering a tribute to his dead friend, Paul Curran.
Loads more vox as well as pops this week.

This show rocks. Pittsburgh in the Rain, Peel's Festive 50, Liverpool's great lost record; The Ruts and The Rakes, separated by 25 years, joined at the same London hip.
The ghost of Phil Lynott and the Black Star Riders; the grand old dukes of rock, Beck and Frampton. Songs that are red; bands that are red. Guitars to Hull and back. And then Shriekback.
Danger. This show could self-ignite.

The Gospel Truth
Gospel music has its origins in the hymns, spirituals and sacred songs in Afro-American culture in the 18th and 19th Centuries. Gospel songs were sung by African slaves about escaping to freedom, and giving thanks to God.
Its music features prominent sections for solo singers. The lead vocalist improvises around the melody while the rest of the choir sing backing vocals, often with question and answer, or call and response. Its spirit and passion permeates the whole of popular music and often pops up in surprising places. But the voices all have one thing in common – they are pleading to be heard.
