Louisiana Is Trending Upward

Listen Later

Louisiana is showing signs of progress, according to the latest edition of the Louisiana Fact Book, a data-driven report compiled by Leaders for a Better Louisiana. Barry Erwin, president of the organization, explains that the Fact Book tracks 35 key indicators across sectors like education, workforce, economy, health, infrastructure, and environment. Now in its third year, the 2025 report reveals a positive shift: 20 indicators are trending upward, 13 downward, and 2 remain unchanged—an improvement from last year’s even split between gains and losses.

Education and workforce development are standout areas. Investments in early literacy, math, and high-dosage tutoring are yielding results, while dual enrollment and increased adult education attainment are strengthening the workforce. The economy also shows encouraging signs. For the first time since 2020, Louisiana saw a net population increase of about 10,000 people and a significant reduction in outmigration. Employment has rebounded to pre-COVID levels, surpassing the national average in job growth and reaching 2 million employed residents—a milestone not seen in over a decade.

However, challenges remain, particularly in health and well-being. Life expectancy continues to decline, and issues like infant mortality and low birth weight persist. While there have been slight improvements in heart disease and obesity rates, chronic health and behavioral issues—including overdose deaths and violent crime—still impact overall outcomes.

The report is based entirely on hard data from reliable sources, not opinion polls, ensuring an accurate snapshot of Louisiana’s progress. While not all indicators are where they need to be, the overall trajectory is promising, suggesting that targeted efforts in education, workforce, and economic development are beginning to pay off.
