Alex Merritt, The Love Engineer, talks about why communication really is the key in relationships and why chemistry is not. She drops major gems that will help both men and women truly understand how to better understand and communicate with each other.
Men and women communicate for different reasons, but both sexes love to talk.
What men dont like is criticism. So they may not talk as much or respond as frequently as women would like because they want to avoid feeling like their opinion is not valued by the women in thieir lives.
- They enjoy talking about things that are of interest to them and that welcome them in and allow them to show some levels of vulnerability
Men talk to solve a problem. Women talk to connect.
- For women, the act of talking is solving the problem; they use talking as a way to build connections; they want men to listen...not fix.
Alex's advice to men is, "listening is fixing"...so listen to your women.
Alex's advice to women is, "tell him why he's listening."
We are the first generation where men and women are spending more and more time together as friends. In generations past, this dynamic did not happen as often.
Men do relationships shoulder to shoulder. Women do relationships face to face.
Understand the material you are working with and then you can put it in the best application.
Men and women should be cognizant to not expect the opposite to behave like their friends; they are not built for that
There are fundamental differences in feminine and masculine energy that cause us to respond differently to communication in relationships
- Masculine energy - direct, to the point, problem-solving
- Feminine energy - open, explorative, creative
A lot of times, high-powered, high-performing women women have been trained to be masculine in the workplace and to turn off their feminine energy because femininity is equated with weakness.
Men are not intimidated by high-powered women. They are not attracted to it (because of the masculine energy) so women have to find a balance between the two.
Rapid Love
- You must love yourself first.
- You are worthy of unconditional love at all times.
- Recommendation - read "Love is Letting Go of Fear" by Gerald G. Jampolsky, MD
- Balance is not equality
- Self care is meditating, praying, brunching, letting go of toxic beliefs regardless of who taught it.
