Love's Summer Reading List --- Hebrews 2:10-18

Family. It could be biological, or it could have evolved from something communal. It's togetherness. Emotional, spiritual, and physical. That's what the Preacher evokes when talking to the harried early church. It's what our own community is called to be for ourselves and others. These are then the connections that can define not only the now, but your past and your future family as well!

Love's Summer Reading List --- Hebrews 2:1-9

The ocean is big. It's an easy place to get lost. Currents and storms can mock the heading you choose. You can end up hopelessly directed into any direction it takes you. The early church likely felt like this as the Preacher is writing to them. Real persecution, community in-fighting, doubt, and despair were as real then as they are today. Possibly more-so. Finding direction takes work, discipline, and calm listening to the voice of our Creator.

Love's Summer Reading List --- Hebrews 1:5-14

Angels probably didn’t feel the need to say “Be not afraid” just because they were slightly shinier attractive human adults. Some of their descriptions are actually downright terrifying. Less Renaissance-era Venetian nobleman and more Elden Ring boss. They were visions of power and awe. And yet, the Preacher reminds us that Christ reigns above even them. A flesh-and-blood man who knew and understood suffering. That’s who is described as sitting on the Right Hand of God and who had ultimate power over death. A paragon of sacrifice and love who had a face like our own. When we fall to our knees in worship, we’re encouraged to then rise and follow the example of the man who was very familiar with the highs and lows of humanity.

Love's Summer Reading List --- Hebrews 1:1-4

Get ready for our own spin on the classic summer vacation reading list you always loved between grades in school! Our new series takes us through the book of Hebrews. Here, we meet one we'll call the Pastor. Unlike a Pauline epistle, this book reads more like a sermon. And it's for a tired and disheartened people. People who couldn't hear the voice of God anymore. So, like them, we're going to read. We're going to listen. We're going to let the Pastor reintroduce us to the song of Creation that began life and sings to us still today.

Pentecost --- Acts 2

It's Pentecost Sunday! We celebrate when the Spirit descended on the new church like tongues of fire. Where thousands were saved in the course of a day and the words of the disciples could be understood in a multitude of languages. It's a reminder that our relationship with the Divine became personal and driving. We can be powerful. We can enact change on a miraculous level. It's our responsibility to grow here and take strength in the Spirit like the disciples did on that day.

Ascension Sunday --- Acts 1

Today, we remember why we're here. Celebrating Jesus's final victory over death legitimizes the power of Christ in the world. But let's not forget what he did before we rose to Heaven. He gave us a Commission. We have a job to do. As our world shrinks, the ends of the earth may not seem that far anymore. But have you been the Light to people as close as your family? Your community. Start there. We also celebrate the ministry of Amanda Aziz with us as we bless her way to Boston after this week.

Daily Livin' --- James 5

This week we conclude our often-times blistering series on James. And don't let chapter 5's preamble about the rich make you comfortable. Whether you feel rich or not, you might begin to recognize that a typical American life looks quite a bit like what James warns about here. Are you living to the detriment or betterment of others? Do your purchases fund working conditions that are slavery in all but name? Are you a good steward of the planet? Has individualism isolated you from others? James challenges us to recognize that how you live every day needs to speak the truths you claim to believe. Else, how much do you believe them?

Earthliness. It's not just thinking and talking like the crowd does. James makes us ask what we're actually DOING with our lives here. Where are you moving? What is your goal? Where is it pointing? Could you be called to rethink what you believed your path is and walk somewhere new? Or are you right where you need to be, but you need to listen for the opportunity around you?

When you think of the "works" James talks about you probably picture actions. Physical instances of good work or kindness. But so much of what you do around your fellows begins with words. What you say, what you hear, what you teach, what you model... these might be the be the biggest point of impact you have on someone. The care we put into what we say really can define who we are to others. And often to ourselves.

Daily Livin' --- James 2

Faith without works. Hoof. This is a tough one. Some of our favorite passages in the Gospels are about what Christ has done for us to win salvation. But then James 2 comes in and challenges us further with harsh bluntness. And yet, there is an undeniable practicality and logic to his words. And there's hope. Work doesn't mean there isn't practice or help. We are a community who should be driven by our salvation; quick with a helping hand rather than judgement.
