What does it really take to build a lasting career in Hollywood?
In Episode 69 of Love, Growth & Narratives, we sit down with our friend, actor Paul Mabon—who you may recognize as Alan from the Progressive commercials, along with appearances on The Upshaws, The Pitt, Insecure, and many other television and film projects.
But Paul’s story started long before Hollywood.
Growing up in Chicago with a father who was a theater actor, Paul was introduced early to the world of performance. His creative path began with poetry, eventually taking him to stages including HBO’s Def Poetry Jam. He remains a poet today, while making acting the primary focus of his professional career.
We talk about his upbringing, the influence of his father, the challenges and uncertainty of starting out as an actor, and what it takes to continue working and stay relevant in an industry where nothing is guaranteed.
It’s a conversation about creativity, perseverance, reinvention, and building a career that lasts.
And there’s more ahead for Paul. He’s stepping behind the scenes as a creator with his upcoming film, The Professional Kids.
