Martin was one of the first guests we had on the show when we launched over 8 years ago and we are so glad to have had the chance to talk to him again. In this conversation Martin shares the story of Sammy the Cocker Spaniel, who had a very rough go but wound up living to an estimated age of 18 with love and care. Since that time Martin has been instrumental in spreading the word about other animal neglect and abuse cases and helping many of these animals get a happy ending too. Visit the Sammy The Cocker Spaniel Facebook page to learn more.

We had a wonderful conversation with Sheila, who filled us in on the important work BDRA is doing. Anyone who has had a blind or visually impaired dog knows there can be challenges. But it is also amazing just HOW well so many of these dogs adjust. The purpose of BDRA is to educate and to help blind dogs and their families navigate the landscape and not only survive but thrive as well. Learn more about BDRA and how YOU can help too. In today’s conversation Diane shares about the huge need for fostering, especially in the Tacoma area, and also about her own experiences as a foster mom and finally a “foster failure” having adopted Sammy, a 98 pound bundle of love. We touch on the reasons why there is such a much larger need now, including rising costs for vet care, and also people adopting animals during the pandemic only to turn them back in when they got busy with work again. Education and managing expectations are all important. If you’d like to learn more, or lend your support as a donor or volunteer, please visit https://www.thehumanesociety.org/about-us/

Today’s show features a conversation with Suman Kamath, founder of
Toby’s Hope, and her charity partner Cesar Pazo. Toby’s Hope was founded
to help provide resources for people dealing with dogs with lymphoma.
The goal is to reach diverse communities including those where a
language or culture barrier might make it more difficult than usual to
find the needed resources during such stressful times.
The organization helps with providing grants to people to offset
medical costs, as well as online and in-person support groups for all
those dealing with what can be a difficult and expensive disease. While
Toby’s Hope currently serves just Washington pet parents, and only
focuses on dogs with lymphoma, their hope is to branch out and provide
care for additional cancers as the organization grows.
Learn more about Toby’s Hope, and also how you might be able to help, at www.tobyshope.org You can also find them on Facebook.

For those who have lost a pet, the grief can be as bad or sometimes worse than losing a person. For many who are single or widowed their pet might be the only company they have most of the time. Connie Starr founded the Pet Loss Support Group, via Seattle Animal Shelter, in 2006. In this conversation with Connie we talk about pet loss in general, how the group works, and what can help when going through the grief process. For more information about the pet loss group visit https://seattle.gov/animalshelter/ and then enter Pet Loss Support in the search bar. The support group meets online, free of charge, and all are welcome.

Today’s conversation with Mari Maeda focuses on some new clinical trials that are proving promising for dogs with two of the most common cancers, hemangiosarcoma and osteosarcoma. This research has the potential to help dogs suffering from many other types of cancer as well. We discussed some of the more common cancers, what might contribute to them, ways to optimize our dogs’ health, and how to find help in your area. Learn more on their website: www.enddogcancer.org

We are pleased to have Brenda back in our studios! She has been an advocate for special needs animals, having adopted a blind and deaf cocker spaniel from a shelter, who is now living his best life-- and helping teach others that it’s OK to be different! Our conversation also digs in a bit more on how to recognize scams when looking for a new pet—from pet stores selling puppy mill dogs to online sales or supposed “rescues” that might not be legitimate. Brenda has a wealth of information to share and you can learn more by visiting her Facebook page. Jamie’s Journey!
