  • THE JULIAN WAY: Disability Theology – A conversation with Rev. Justin Hancock [LDT017]
    Justin & Lisa Hancock
Rev. Justin Hancock and his wife Lisa Hancock are in the early stages of creating an intentional Christian community in Dallas, TX, that will be focused on living the Gospel in the body that you have. They are now in the planning stages, working with the Missional Wisdom Foundation, of bringing support and understanding into the lives of disabled people who want to live the Gospel in the bodies they were given. Their project is called The Julian Way, after the 14th Century mystic, Julian of Norwich.  (LDT017)

  • THE FUTURE OF EVANGELICAL THEOLOGY: SOUNDINGS FROM THE ASIAN AMERICAN DIASPORA – a conversation with Dr. Amos Young [LDT016]
Dr. Amos Young is the new Director of the Center for Missiological Research and Professor of Theology and Mission at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA. In his new book, he files a “minority report” on the theology of the traditional Evangelical Church, from the point of view of Asian American Christians. He points out that Evangelical practice is diverse in its world-wide scale, but that the theology has not developed with on-the-ground reality.

  • THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE 1914 [LDT015]
Not many have heard about it, but in the first winter of World War I, on Christmas Eve, thousands of soldiers on both sides of the war (British, French & German) simply put their weapons down and temporarily stopped the war in order to celebrate Christmas together. It’s an amazing reminder that we, the regular people, can say “No” to the empire and refuse to fight their wars. An important lesson for us today.
This is a brief episode. I’m taking some time off till January. Happy Holidays to you all.

  • THE SIMPLE WAY: a conversation with Shane Claiborne [LDT014]
Today’s guest is known to Christians concerned about justice and creative community building. In 1995, he and a small group of Christians

created The Simple Way, an intentional community devoted to really living out the teachings of Jesus in a mixed, poor neighborhood of Philadelphia. Christian intentional communities are now popping up in cities across the land.  The experience and example of The Simple Way have influenced many who are looking ahead to the “next phase” of Church.
Always in the fight for justice, Shane has been involved in work with the poor and with struggling people everywhere. His adventures have taken him from the streets of Calcutta where he worked with Mother Teresa to the wealthy suburbs of Chicago where he served at the influential mega-church Willow Creek. As a peacemaker, his journeys have taken him to some of the most troubled regions of the world – from Rwanda to the West Bank – and he’s been on peace delegations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Shane writes and travels extensively speaking about peacemaking, social justice, and Jesus. Shane’s many books include “Ordinary Radicals “and “Common Prayer.” His books are translated into more than a dozen languages. Shane speaks over 100 times a year, nationally and internationally.

  • ECCLESIA MINISTRIES: Bringing Church to the Rejected – A conversation with Fr. Clyde Kuemmerle [LDT013]
Truly I tell you, just as you did it
to one of the least of these
who are members of my family,
you did it to me. (Matthew 25:40)
Fr. Clylde Kuemmerle takes the Gospel to where the homeless and rejected meet and live. The parks of New York City serve as the “living room” of the poor. Every Sunday in New York three parks where poor and homeless people congregate, Ecclesia Ministries holds Church, complete with hymns, readings, prayers and communion. Then, the Church serves lunch to all who are
    The Ecclesia Cross
there. This powerful witness also becomes a “home” for its congregants, as the weeks go by. In times we (including Christians) make the poor invisible, ignoring them as we walk down the street, a ministry like this brings us face to face with the people at the basis of Jesus’
    understanding.                (LDT013)

  • #STAYWOKEADVENT – a conversation with Micky Jones [LDT012]

Therefore, Stay Woke — for you do not know
when the master of the house will come,
in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow,
or at dawn, or else he may find you asleep
    when he comes suddenly.
And what I say to you I say to all:
    Stay Woke!
    (Mark 13:35-37)

Advent is the month before Christmas. It’s the part of the Church calendar where we anticipate the coming of Jesus. We spend these four weeks focusing on the world that will come into being because of the birth of the Son of God. Obviously, that wonderful world has not arrived yet. We are actually still waiting.
This quote above is from the lectionary Gospel selection for the First Sunday of Advent this year. Ok, I made a slight edit of the translation (In the NRSV it says “keep alert”). This is definitely a time when we have to “Stay Woke” to the very important changes and growing pains that our world is going through. We have wars, climate change, epidemics, and turmoil all over the world and here in the US, we have the ongoing crisis of police impunity and murders of people of color coupled with a very exciting nation-wide movement to fight it.
Micky Jones, our guest in this episode, is one of the instigators of a special Advent campaign built around a hashtag: #StayWokeAdvent. In some ways consciousness is high, very much because of the conversations going on triggered by the murder of Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO by police officer Derrin Wilson. The call to “Stay Woke” has a particular urgency.  In addition to the hashtag campaign, writings, photos, poetry, and artistic works are being added to the community blog of the campaign.
This call was recorded on Monday, December 1, 2014, one week after the announcement that Wilson would not be indicted for killing Mike Brown. It is also the day after the first Sunday in Advent.   (LDT012)
