Jesus gives his disciples a new commandment to love one another, but this isn't just any kind of love. Unlike the old command to love your neighbor as yourself, Jesus raises the standard to loving as he has loved us. This command is necessary because loving fellow Christians can be harder than loving non-believers since we expect more from those who know God's truth. When Christians disappoint us or act hypocritically, it's natural to feel frustrated. However, Jesus demonstrated this love by washing his disciples' feet, including Judas who would betray him. Our love for one another serves as the primary way the world will recognize us as Jesus' disciples, making it our strongest witness to the truth of the gospel.
