Cerramos con este programa el tributo que rendimos a Henry Mancini cuya enorme creatividad nos dejó tantos temas y canciones que a pesar de tener que sacrificar multitud de sus composiciones que fueron fuente inagotable para los músicos de jazz, nos era imposible meterlo todo en dos podcast, así que tras el dedicado a su colaboración con Blake Edwards y el de sus temas para el cine, dedicamos otro programa a repasar algunas de sus canciones para el cine y la televisión que se hicieron rápidamente populares.

Las canciones en sus bandas sonoras muchas veces eran interpretadas por un coro mixto, como un elemento más de la orquesta, aunque contaba con letristas de la talla de Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse, Alan & Marilyn Bergman o Carole Bayer Sager, entre otros.

En este podcast a diferencia de lo que hicimos en anteriores ocasiones, no unimos a un músico y su letrista como colaborador habitual, sino a un músico y al director de cine que requirió de sus servicios para sus películas, creando una asociación que nos regaló un buen puñado de películas.

Blake Edwards es uno de los grandes guionistas y directores de cine americanos con posiblemente la carrera más exitosa de principios de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. En 1959 Henry Mancini compuso la música para la serie de televisión que dirigía  Blake Edwards "Peter Gunn", ambientada en un club de jazz, que tuvo en su primera grabación entre otros músicos al pianista Johnny T. (Curly) Williams…. Sí, John Williams veinte años antes de “La guerra de las galaxias”. Mancini declaró que Edwards le desafiaba cada semana con largas escenas sin diálogo, escuchando la partitura musical en su mente. Blake Edwards consideraba la música como una voz vital en la imagen total.

Vamos a tratar el musical "VICTOR VICTORIA", un gran éxito en cine en el año 1982, protagonizado por Julie Andrews, dirigida por su marido Blake Edwards, que parecía el producto perfecto para debutar en Broadway el famoso director con su amigo y colaborador musical en casi todas sus películas el gran compositor Henry Mancini.

La versión que escucharemos es la estrenada en Broadway con Julie Andrews como Victor y Victoria, Tony Roberts como su amigo Toddy, Michel Nouri como King Merchand y Rachel York como Norma, la amante de King.

Leslie Bricusse es un compositor y letrista inglés que con el actor y cantante Anthony Newley escribió los musicales “STOP THE WORLD, I WANT TO GET OFF” (1961), “THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAINT – THE SMELL OF THE CROWD” (1965), o THE GOOD OLD BAD OLD DAYS (1974) que incluyen canciones como “Feelin’ Good” o “What kind of fool am I?" que siguen versionando intérpretes como Anthony Warlow o Michael Bublé.

Frank Wildhorn es un compositor americano que alcanzó cierta fama trabajando para artistas como Natalie Cole, Kenny Rogers o Whitney Houston que le llevó al número uno de ventas su canción "Where do broken hearts go?", pero pronto el compositor se centró en el mundo del musical.

Linda Eder para la que compuso y produjo la mayoría de sus discos y con la que estuvo casado entre 1998 y 2004 fue de gran apoyo como actriz y cantante en el mundo del musical con proyectos que les costó sacar adelante como “SVENGALI” o “JEKYLL AND HYDE” al que hemos dedicado el “Cuéntame un musical” de este mes y que sigue siendo su mayor éxito hasta la fecha.

Prolífico compositor de canciones que ha escrito veintitrés musicales en los últimos treinta años, aunque no siempre le ha sonreído la suerte ni la crítica, sobre todo en su país, lo cual ha hecho que en los últimos años estrene con mayor fortuna sus musicales en Europa del Este o Asia.

Vamos a tratar el musical “Jekyll & Hyde” basado en la popular novela de Robert Louis Stevenson que critica y público aplaudieron desde el momento de su estreno en 1990. A pesar de ella tuvieron serios problemas financieros para poder llevarlo a Nueva York donde no se estrenó hasta siete años más tarde en Broadway.

El musical lo estrenó en España Raphael en 2001 y tuvo gran éxito si bien el CD que se publicó sólo tenía los temas más importantes del musical, por lo cual, decidimos escoger para el podcast la grabación que produjo el compositor en 1994 con el título de “Jekyll & Hyde: Un thriller gótico musical” con el excelente Anthony Warlow como Jekyll & Hyde, Linda Eder como Lucy y Carolee Carmello como Lisa Carew.

Hoy traemos a esta galería de protagonistas a Elaine Paige, todo un referente del musical por haber creado algunos de los personajes femeninos más importantes del musical, si bien es una desconocida por el gran público por haber centrado su carrera en el teatro, grabaciones y conciertos principalmente en Reino Unido.

Se la conoce como la Primera Dama del musical inglés y fue galardonada en 1995 con la Orden del Imperio Británico por su labor en el teatro musical. Ha grabado más de veinte álbumes en solitario, además de los de casi todos los musicales en los que ha intervenido. Ha colaborado con diferentes artistas y sus giras de conciertos agotaban las localidades en cuanto se ponían a la venta.

Bienvenidos al último capítulo sobre la historia del musical en España. Una tarea que acometí como homenaje a Iñigo Santamaría y Xavier Martinez, con los que compartí afición, amistad, risas y conversaciones sobre la idea de escribir un libro que dejase constancia del recorrido del teatro musical en España a lo largo de los años.

Partiendo de la enciclopedia que escribieron titulada "DESDE EL SUR DEL PACÍFICO HASTA MÁS ALLÁ DE LA LUNA" monté una cronología de los títulos más interesantes para hacer llegar la historia en formato de podcast a los aficionados que no consiguieron la enciclopedia, tratando de acompañarla con audios, que no siempre tuvieron la calidad que me hubiera gustado, pero la falta de grabaciones oficiales, no me dejaron otra opción.

Este mes traemos un musical que ha tenido bastante éxito entre los más jóvenes, que se ven reflejados en el escenario con temas como la marginación y el bulling, aunque en este caso el tema es  tratado con grandes dosis de humor y en el que encontramos cierta conexión con "La tienda de los horrores".

No tuvo una larga carrera en el off Broadway pero llamó la atención y se exportó a Londres donde también tuvo enorme eco entre la juventud.
