Publisher's Summary:
She has hair of ginger and lovely green eyes, and she has just been transported with her family from Terezín to Auschwitz. In short order, her father commits suicide, and her mother and younger brother are dispatched to the gas chambers, but fifteen-year-old Hanka Kauderzová is still alive. Faced with the choice of certain death in the camp or working in a German military brothel, she chooses a chance at life. Passing for an Aryan, Hanka spends her days in the brothel cold, hungry, fearful, and ashamed. She is sustained only by her loathing of the men who visit her and by a fierce, indomitable will to live.
This devastatingly beautiful novel explores and delineates the impossible choices one sometimes has to make in life, when the fabric of the world is rent asunder. Soaring beyond the nightmare, it leaves the reader with a transcendent sense of hope.
Critic Reviews:
"A moving act of absolution....This strong novel about a girl who is debased but never destroyed pushes the reader to a new level of understanding of the things people do - and the things that are done to them." (Washington Post Book World)

Story of Survival
It's difficult to say you "like" a book when it's set during one of the darkest times in world history. This book is the story about a Jewish girl who has green eyes and ginger colored hair. Because she looked more "Aryan" than "Jewish" she is selected to work in a German Army Field bordello.
At it's heart, this is a story about survival. "Skinny," did what she needed to do to survive the Holocaust...she became a prostitute for the German army. This was after she had watched as her father threw himself against the electrified fence at Auschwitz and never saw her mother or brother again after getting off the trains. "Skinny" saw an opportunity to survive, and that is exactly what she did. Anyone in her shoes, with a will to live would have very likely made the same survival decisions.
"Lovely Green Eyes" has a good story, but in places I found it difficult to follow. In places it was difficult to tell past from "present."
Lovely Green Eyes is a deep, masterful exploration of the Holocaust.
A fifteen-year-old Jewish girl opts for life and gets herself assigned to an SS brothel near the Eastern front. The book weaves the victimsâ inhumane suffering with unsettling portraits of maniacal and ambitious perpetrators leaving no doubt that the arch villain is Nazi racist doctrine. As the story unfolds jumping between the girlâs experience during and after the war, blending the horrific with the mundane, questions about vengeance, judgment, guilt, and survival are brought up through conversations and reflections, portraits of souls struggling to deal with what happened. If the Holocaust is important to you â donât miss this moving and brilliant book.
Human survival
Wow. So philosophical, almost get lost in it, but then you get back to the reality of the unthinkable. How glad I am to know skinny had the strength to survive her horrendous lowly worms, wh felt strong by being the worst murderers and pain inflicters .
Good survived evil. The philosophical helps us deal with such horror while reading.
unrealized potential
This is the story of a German brothel during World War II.
