The truth is when it comes to WWOOFING it’s almost ALWAYS an AWESOME opportunity to venture to a place outside your comfort zone and head to a place you wouldn’t normally be able to afford and visit by staying an extended time in a beautiful place where you can learn about Organic farming, see how locals live in the area, may it be a state or country, meet and connect with new people from around the world and be given House and Board for the labor you put into the farm…You learn and grow as a person and the Farm Grows and gets your services for free for giving you a place to live and food…often the organic food you grow and pick…BUT…

Things don’t always go as planned…and sometimes, even if it’s only about 5-10% of the time, things can go SERIOUSLY WRONG as happened in the case we are going to talk about today with Hannah Brooke Bergeron, who we helped get out of a seriously NASTY WOOFING SCAM here in Hawaii on the Westside of Oahu in Makaha Valley! So…Lets think about this…Would you come to HAWAII on a Whim or would you come to HAWAII with a Plan? You would think that’s an easy question right? NOPE! It looks like there are people who plan and people who don’t…there are even people that take a vacation to Hawaii and just never get back on the plane…THAT’S CRAZY TALK, but it happens EVERYDAY here in Hawai’i Nei…YES…we know people who come here on a WHIM, but we are talking very few, about 10% and even less than that actually make it.

We may be all about what our Heart tells us, but the reality today is this isn’t a movie…you won’t be moving across the world to make you dreams come true…if you come here and just pack your things on a whim and don’t have a solid plan…Sorry, but this won’t be the place that you make your dreams come true…

…it will be the place of NIGHTMARES, perhaps even HOMELESSNESS as so many others have found out.  Moving to Hawaii is no joke…you need to go all in with all you have or you will be going home…but that’s if you have the money for a plane ticket home…if not…You’ll be this guy in the image above…Don’t be that guy in the image above.

KAUAI in our book is the Oldest most Beautiful and visually Stunning Island in the Hawaiian Chain…it’s had some time to settle in and erode as well, creating some of the most AMAZING RIDGELINES ON EARTH! Kauai is truly the Garden Isle.

Kauai is an outdoorsman’s playground. If you seek the best Hiking, the best outdoor activities and best camping around, Kauai is for you! If your intentions are to come here and just drink Mai Tais on the beach…Forget it! You come here to seek adventure, to test your skills from fishing, kayaking, hiking, camping, horseback riding, scuba diving, ziplining and everything else under the sun.

At approximately six million years old, it is the oldest of the main islands. The highest peak on this mountainous island is Kawaikini at 5,243 feet…The second highest peak is Wai’ale’ale near the center of the island, 5,148 feet. The wettest spots on Earth, with an annual average rainfall of 460 inches is located on the east side of Mount Waiʻaleʻale. The high annual rainfall has eroded deep valleys in the central mountains, carving out canyons with many scenic waterfalls. On the west side of the island, Waimea town is located at the mouth of the Waimea River, whose flow formed the GREAT Waimea Canyon, one of the world’s most scenic canyons, known to all as the Great GRAND CANYON of the Pacific at 3,000 feet deep. The Na Pali Coast is the center for recreation which including Kayaking, Boating or Hiking past amazing Mountain Ridges,  Beaches and Hiking trails.

In 1778, Captain James Cook arrived at Waimea Bay, he was the first European known to reach the Hawaiian islands and Kauai was the first island he visited. He named the Hawaiian Islands after his patron the Earl of Sandwich. At the time the Hawaiian Islands had been called the SANDWICH ISLANDS.

During the reign of King Kamehameha,  the islands of Kauaʻi and Niʻihau were the last Hawaiian Islands to join the UNITED KINGDOM of HAWAII Their ruler, Kaumuali’i resisted Kamehameha for years. King Kamehameha twice prepared a huge armada of ships and canoes to take the islands by force, and failed; once due to a storm, and the other because of an island wide epidemic. In the face of a third attempt to take Kauai and Ni’ihau by Kamehameha, Kaumualiʻi decided to surrender and join the kingdom of Hawaii without bloodshed in 1810.

Now with some great info and history out of the way…Lets look into what you will be doing when you visit Kauai as there are an endless about of things to do for those who seek adventure in the ocean, valley’s and Mountains…from Queens Bath, to Tunnels Beach, to Wai ‘ale’ali Crater, to Wailua Falls and Kayaking the Wailua River to even Hiking the Pinnacle of Hiking on the Na Pali Coast Kalalau Trail…all 11 Miles back and forth…if you are seeking Adventure then Kauai is the island for you and we talk about it all during our Lucky We Live Hawaii Podcast…KAUAI…The Garden Isle.

 

It’s been a very, very long time since we went head on into the Hawaii Music Scene and one of the reasons is it’s taken this long to get someone in Studio who really knows his stuff…Finally we reached out to Braddah Bobby to sit down and talk story about not only his journey to Hawaii, but for him to break down the current state of affairs with the Hawaii Music Scene here on the islands. We have some serious issues that are starting to take form here in paradise.

Bobby Pileggi has sent out his message…”We have a very serious problem going on with Honolulu radio programming that is now affecting the culture and the future of Hawaii’s recording artists. As a music publisher for over hundreds of local songwriters and recording artists each week I receive 30 plus calls from premiere recording artists asking “Why are the Honolulu stations not playing much local music anymore?” Well here are the facts…three years ago the radio stations in Honolulu were playing 75+% of local music from Hawaii based recording artists and 25-% of their programming from out of state artists…Now it 45-% local and 55+% out of state. Furthermore the top stations are playing 2-3 songs from the same artist in their top 40 programming. You ask me why…My opinion is that it’s all about ratings versus not taking care of their own! I went to the State Capitol today on your behalf to appeal for help. I received much support from Senators and Congressman and was told that we have to contact the FCC, the stations sponsors and their GMs. If you want more information please inbox me or call me….If you care about Hawaii’s music and the future of Hawaii’s culture ACT NOW! This problem is not going to go away unless we defend Hawaiian music!”

Hawaii may be a vacationers Paradise, but don’t think for a moment something tragic can’t happen to you here in Hawaii. There are many DANGERS when visiting so as long as you are prepared and know what to look for you will be SAFE!

Vacations and Locals die here all the time…almost all of them because they are not properly prepared to deal with the AVOIDABLE DANGERS. You need to know what can and can’t kill you…When people hear that there is no animals/fish that can kill you here except for the Tiger Shark people sometimes let their guard down while out in nature…However Hawaii is WILD in it’s own way and if you don’t watch it and know what to look for and avoid…NATURE WILL bite you and you may just die from that bite.

So what are the biggest dangers in Hawaii you all need to be cautious of here in Paradise…

THE #1 DANGER in HAWAII is THE OCEAN

Of all the reasons people come to Hawaii is for the Ocean and Sun. The Ocean has killed more people than anything else in Hawaii and it’s because people just don’t understand what the dangers are.

WAVES are a KILLER… CURRENTS, RIP TIDES and the CORAL REEF can cut you in HALF…Drowning is the TOP KILLER here!

These are top concerns when visiting Hawaii…if you don’t understand and know the Hawaii Ocean…you shouldn’t be going in it.

The Ocean here can drop off quickly, the Waves and Currents ARE POWERFUL and they don’t always have to be BIG to hurt you. Certain Beaches are Dangerous all year and others only certain times of the year. You need to know your limits and what beaches you can and shouldn’t be going to. ALWAYS LOOK AT BEACH SIGNS and TALK TO THE LIFEGUARD on the current beach conditions to be safe! do not SWIM in Waters that have strong currents, white water and no Lifeguards to be safe. NEVER go in the ocean alone…NEVER…always have a swim buddy! WINTER brings Large Dangerous swells to the North Shores while the south shores are safer…in the SUMMER the North Shore is calm while the South Shore is more dangerous…ALWAYS watch for the Surf and weather forecast and look for the High and Low tide before you go out for the day…BE SMART…the more INFO you have…the SAFER you will be! If you are ever in trouble and you happen to get caught in a rip current never swim against it…always swim parallel to the beach and out of the pull current…once you don’t feel the pull and it gets weaker swim into shore!

Always wear PROPER GEAR when swimming, surfing, snorkeling or scuba diving…wear protective clothing…don’t be foolish…Do your research on what to wear…a rash guard is essential…board shorts, fins, mask, snorkel, gloves, reef shoes, bright colors etc…Do your research because the CORAL REEF can cut you and open you up like a pig and the last thing you want to do is start bleeding in the ocean…you don’t want something else coming after you! Always be careful on any reef…above or below water…above you can slip and get knocked out or cut badly…under the water the current and waves can toss you into the reef cutting you up as well…you must be prepared for such things and if you get cut by the reef you must see a Doctor ASAP…Coral is ALIVE and can infect your skin and start to grow under your flesh…YOU DON’T WANT THAT HAPPENING! Knowledge is power and education keeps you safe!

No one has ever moved to Hawaii and had an easy time finding a JOB here…well, unless you have the GODS on your side who allow you to TRANSFER JOBS from the mainland…if you manage that…well Congratufuckinglations…but for the rest of us…it’s a OUTRIGHT BATTLE and the one thing you need to settle down here in Paradise or it’s time to ship out back to the mainland or become homeless in Ala Moana Beach Park!

You never want to be that guy or girl that gives up, leaves Hawaii, goes home and crawls up in a ball crying like a little baby as to why you failed! YOU DON’T WANT TO BE THAT GUY! You seriously need to understand that people fail because they give up and don’t try again…ITS OK TO FAIL…as long as you get back up and try again…God hates a coward and failure and if you made it this far to get to Hawaii you would rather burn in Hell than go back to where you DON’T want to be…Not everyone makes it in Hawaii…Winners do…Leaders do…the rest follow the others home. So what happens if you do have a hard time getting those roots in the ground…getting your first Job to allow you to survive until something better comes around…There is a great first stop even if you have NO EXPERIENCE in a certain field, people ARE looking for those Jobs that need to be filled, but very few apply for, if you have a passion and desire you can do anything if someone teaches or trains you to do, that’s the type of spirit that are in people who Dream…INDEED one search. all Jobs. It’s that time of year again…The HOLIDAY SEASON and this is the time of year to be GRATEFUL for the things you have…no matter how little or how much. THANKSGIVING has always been a time to get together with family, ohana or friends and just eat, laugh, play, watch movies, drink and enjoy each others company…it’s about friendship and love…the smells, the sounds…we should be thankful for such simple things because there are those who don’t even get to enjoy a hug from a loved one or a slice of turkey with gravy or candy yams or even a warm place to sleep…Yes…YOU ARE THANKFUL…and I hope for those of us who have family, friends, love and friends we take a moment to do something wonderful for those who have less…there is nothing like giving of yourself to those who have nothing…Here in Hawaii many of us are just thankful we wake up each day in the most beautiful place on Earth…We are thankful for the birds that sing in the morning, the smells of the Plumeria flower that floats in the air, the sounds of the ocean waves as they pound the power sand beaches, the sounds of the wind through the palm trees above…So simple, but we are so thankful for such things…We are all lucky to live here in Hawaii…Blessed indeed and to give back to the communities that have given us so many memories is truly an honor…We live in a very special place…
