A "type" is something in literature, or historically an event, something that actually happens. But it also is a foreshadowing or a prefigurement of something greater that is going to happen. One of the most famous types or foreshadowing in the Old Testament is the story of Moses and the bronze serpent. The bronze serpent in the desert is a type, or a foreshadowing, a prefigurement of Christ hanging on the cross.

The idea of honoring mothers comes naturally enough because the very concept of motherhood is so honorable and because mothers are themselves so lovable.
