USA TODAY: Fact check: Yes, viruses can mutate to become more deadly
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/07/14/fact-check-viruses-can-mutate-become-more-deadly/7839167002/
The claim: Viruses never mutate to become more lethal
As the U.S. faces down the COVID-19 Delta variant – now fast-becoming the nation's dominant strain – reports of a new Lambda variant that first emerged in Peru in August 2020 are gaining the attention of public health officials worldwide.
News of this coronavirus variant is concerning, especially what it could mean for new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths, all of which had been declining in the last few months. But one tweet being shared across social media claims new viral strains are nothing to be worried about.
"One more time, for the folks in the back: In the history of virology, there has never, EVER, been a viral mutation that resulted in a virus that was MORE lethal," reads a tweet by Dr. Kelly Victory shared in a June 30 Facebook post.
This evolutionary trade-off likely can keep a virus in check, but it's not as black-and-white as Victory makes it out to be. Experts say viral mutation is a complex calculus but there are several instances where viruses have evolved into more lethal strains.
Victory claims no virus has ever become more deadly over time, but experts say that's not the case.
"The statement that 'in the history of virology, there has never, ever, been a viral mutation that resulted in a virus that was more lethal' appears to be quite untrue," Timothy Sheahan, virologist and assistant professor for the Gillings School of Global Public Health of the University of North Carolina, told USA TODAY.
Sheahan pointed to several examples such as the Ebola virus, which was discovered in 2016 to have undergone a mutation that not only made it more transmissible but likely more infective. This variant eventually died when the epidemic ended in 2016. The West Nile virus was found in 1999 to have mutated into a highly virulent strain, killing crows on multiple continents.

From Wikipedia: US energy independence is the idea of eliminating the need for the United States to import petroleum and other foreign sources of energy. Energy independence is espoused by those who want to leave the US unaffected by global energy supply disruptions, and to restrict reliance upon politically unstable states for its energy security. Energy independence is highly concerned with oil, the source of the country's principal transport fuels.
In total energy consumption, the US was between 86% and 91% self-sufficient in 2016. In May 2011, the country became a net exporter of refined petroleum products. As of 2014, the United States was the world's third largest producer of crude oil, after Saudi Arabia and Russia, and second-largest exporter of refined products, after Russia. In November 2019, the United States became a net exporter of all oil products, including both refined petroleum products and crude oil. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_energy_independence

  • Politicians Act In Their Self-Interest, And Soldiers Often Die For Vanity Projects
From a Yale Law paper: If Americans know one thing about their system of government, it is that they live in a democracy and that other, less fortunate people, live in dictatorships. Dictatorships are what democracies are not, the very opposite of representative government under a constitution.
The opposition between democracy and dictatorship, however, is greatly overstated. The term “dictatorship,” after all, began as a special constitutional office of the Roman Republic, granting a single person extraordinary emergency powers for a limited period of time. “Every man the least conversant in Roman story,” remarked Alexander Hamilton in The Federalist No. 70, “knows how often that republic was obliged to take refuge in the absolute power of a single man, under the formidable title of Dictator” to confront emergencies caused by insurrection, sedition, and external enemies. No political constitution was well designed, Hamilton believed, unless it could confront emergencies and provide for energetic executive powers to handle them.
...Nor should we forget John F. Kennedy's actions during the Cuban Missile Crisis. It is often viewed as Kennedy's finest hour because the United States avoided a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. What is often overlooked in the dramatic tales surrounding those "thirteen days"' of meetings in Washington with Kennedy and his Ex-Comm (Executive Committee of the National Security Council) is that everyone participating assumed that it was up to the President to decide whether or not to embark on what would surely have become a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The exact nature of the crisis was hidden from almost everyone in the country. Kennedy's acolyte Theodore Sorenson reports that at the time Kennedy estimated the odds of nuclear war at one in three. Interestingly enough, Abram Chayes, in his flattering portrayal of Kennedy's conduct during the Crisis, did not suggest that there was anything amiss in Kennedy's risking nuclear annihilation. Kennedy's behavior seems even more potentially reckless if one accepts the argument made at the time-in secret, of course-by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara that the Cuban missiles in fact posed little or no threat to actual American security. After all, the United States had an overwhelming nuclear stockpile and Soviet leaders surely believed that the United States would use it in response to any missiles fired from Cuba.
One is tempted to analyze the Cuban Missile Crisis-and perhaps foreign wars in general-as purely problems of "foreign policy" or "international relations." But these issues-and the
ways presidents approach them-are often deeply influenced by domestic politics. One of the reasons that Kennedy found himself in such a delicate situation was the fact that constitutionally required elections were about to take place for Congress, and Republican New York Senator Kenneth Keating, among others, was denouncing him for being soft on Soviet penetration of Cuba. Kennedy needed to retain healthy Democratic majorities in both the House and Senate because he could not always depend on Southern Democrats to support his "New Frontier" agenda. Kennedy was also concerned about
his prospects for reelection in 1964. https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=130386

  • Brave New World (8-15-21)
    https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=141775
    * At the end of the book, I had nothing. I had no comments. I had no reactions. I didn't laugh or cry or have any strong emotional or intellectual reaction during the book. It did not remind me of problems we face today. I've had to work harder to come up with comments on this book than any other book I remember. I guess the book did not remind me of anything, it did not trigger me, or stimulate me. It just felt like reading someone's intellectual exercise.
    * Aldous Huxley is mocking the type of world he wants to build. Around this time, he flirts with world government, eugenics, centralized authoritarian control. He does not think democracy is up to the job.
    * Everyone gets inoculated at birth against various diseases, which I think is a good thing.
    * Huxley displays a snobbish looking down on the lower classes. He thought western societies were going down, he wanted state power and propaganda, he was willing to sacrifice individual liberty but saw the downside of what he wanted.
    * Social classes are inevitable and a caste system has upsides and downsides, at least people know who they are.
    * Huxley was reacting to WWI, when government took unprecedented control, just as in Covid, government has taken unprecedented control of our lives.
    * He satirizes keynes, we just had massive keynesian intervention for Covid, and it seems like it was the right thing to do.
    * Intellectuals despise consumption by the masses. In our problems today, consumerism and industrialization rank low on the list.
    * Brave New World, written in 1931, is a satire on California: Lenina: “Hug me till you drug me, honey; Kiss me till I'm in a coma: Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny; Love's as good as soma.” California is the least traditional state, it has the fewest family, religious, ethnic ties compares to other states. California is where people come to get away from traditional ties.
    * Brave New World is also a satire on the United States and Henry Ford's auto factory (intellectuals look down on businessmen).
    * Brave New world satirizes the American commitment to happiness, BNW is a world dedicated to happiness.
    * Unlike Rousseau or TH Lawrence and the romantics, Brave New World depicts the savage reservation as a dystopia.
    * Is brave new world a utopia or a dystopia? There is no war, no pain, no age, no early death.
    * I would rather live in Brave New World than 1984
    * How many liberties would you give up to reduce crime?
    * We have nothing like soma. Opiates and valium come closest. I don't think we live in anything like BNW. Propaganda does not work much.
    * It makes sense that the state would have an interest in reproduction.
    * More or less government control -- not clear which is best...Eugenics, tech, meds can be useful... Hierarchy is normal... The worst people are reproducing... If you need a license to drive a car, why should you not need a license to have kids?

  • Anti-Gentilism - The Hate That Dare Not Speak Its Name (8-11- 21)
    https://quillette.com/2021/08/11/twilight-of-the-satyrs/
Charlotte Allen writes: Gentiles were also among Roth’s lifelong fixations as antagonists. He was ever on the alert for anti-Semitism, both real and imagined. He even classified Bloom, herself Jewish, as an anti-Semite; apparently, it was fine for Roth to rib his fellow Jews, but not Bloom. As an undergraduate at Bucknell University he found it “especially hateful” (Bailey’s words) that Bucknell during the 1950s required its students to attend weekly Christian chapel—leading me, at least, to wonder why, if that were so, Roth hadn’t picked a less sectarian institution of higher learning. In Roth’s fiction, gentiles are usually a curious mix of alcoholics, layabouts, thugs, wife-beaters, nymphomaniacs, genteel underachievers, and nascent Nazis: “goyish chaos,” as he called it. Roth had many gentile friends and many, many gentile lovers, but he insisted upon perpetually casting himself as the maligned and persecuted outsider...
Roth was indeed a brilliantly vivid writer, with a genius for recreating the human scene in sharp-eyed detail and with dialogue that uncannily mimicked heard speech. He could also write lyrically when he wanted to. He was not, however, as great a writer as he thought he was. As Shulevitz pointed out, he wrote a few great novels over the decades (his Pulitzer Prize-winning American Pastoral, published in 1997 and surprisingly sex scene-free, is likely among them), with the rest ranging “from good to terrible” in Shulevitz’s words. His admirable work ethic (inherited from his insurance-agent father) required him to spend eight hours a day every weekday writing, but the result was that he wrote much too much. The Human Stain (2000), about a distinguished professor, a black man who has renounced his ethnicity and passed for Jewish, only to be forced into retirement by accusations of racism over a chance remark in class, is a page-turner, but it has its longeurs—worked-over set pieces that go on and on, such as the 10 pages devoted to the disgraced professor’s three-decades-younger girlfriend’s dancing naked in front of him after the two have had sex. Roth never knew when to stop, and criticisms that he wrote the same novel over and over, and even the same passages over and over, were not unfounded.
Furthermore, he had trouble creating believable characters other than the many versions of himself—Alexander Portnoy, David Kepesh, the Roth-like writer Nathan Zuckerman (who shows up in nine Roth novels, including American Pastoral and The Human Stain), and even a pair of “Philip Roths”—whom he made his talky first-person narrators over the years. Lack of “roundness” isn’t just a problem with Roth’s female figures, but with all of them. They can be colorful enough—dazzling, Dickens-like sketches—but it is hard to believe that they could actually exist. To his Bard students of 1992, whom he characterized in his notes as saturated with “puritanical feminism,” Roth defended Sabbath’s Theater’s lascivious Drenka Balich with her English-as-a-second-language malapropisms, as “every bit as nasty/interesting” (Bailey’s phrase) as his male protagonist, Mickey Sabbath. But in fact Drenka, the self-described “sidekicker,” with a carnal appetite that defies realism, is yet another broadly drawn Roth cartoon.
